Addicted to the pacifier!

So my little man loves to suck, has since the day he was born.  He used his pacifier a lot more but no luckily it is really only for sleeping.  Problem is when I put him in the crib for naps and the night he rubs his eyes so much he ends up knocking it out.  So I am usually sticking it in his mouth 5 times before he finally goes out.  That doesn't bother too much except for now he does this interesting thing where he is up in the middle of the night to talk for about 10 minutes before he decides he wants to sleep again.  So we put the pacifier in the mouth and he is pretty much out until he moves or grabs it out with his hands accidentally and then we are putting it in again.  In the middle of the night DH and I have just been putting him in the bed with us which makes it easier to put the pacifier in and also I think he likes how in sinks in our bed.  But I am afraid this is not a good habit so last night I refused to put him in our bed but he would not stop crying.  I would pick him up and he would start to go down so I would put him in his crib then he would cry again.  After 3 hours it was 6:40 I could hear his stomach growling so I fed him and he fell asleep so I put him in his crib.  I don't know what to do.  I hear up to 6 months sucking is soothing so I don't want to take away the pacifier yet but at the same time I don't know if I should let him cry and learn to sleep without it.  HELP!

  • Joanna used to do something similar to this. She would whimper in her sleep, and we'd have to put the paci back in. We'd have to do it several times a night. She just kind of fell out of the pattern herself. I would stop bringing him to your bed though if you don't want to do bedsharing. You are just going to compound the problem - even if he gets over the paci thing, he'll be used to sleeping with you, and you'll have to break that.

  • Yes, I agree. C constantly has her paci in her mouth, day or night. She has a very strong sucking reflex, and actually gave herself a blister on her hand the night she was born from sucking so hard. I used to be up several times a night to put it back in, but now she can stay asleep without it. She still uses it to fall asleep, but if it falls out, she doesn't wake up for it anymore. It is hard to keep getting up, but if you don't want to bed share,it will be easier in the long run to break that habit first. Eventually they will outgrow the paci
