Oh wow, so this really does exist... (LIP)

I saw this article online and couldn't believe what I was reading.. I admit, I didn't even finish the second page because I was in such disbelief.

Has anyone heard of a couple doing this?

  • Wow, this woman needs help.  I stopped reading at this:

"Simpson and her husband talked about getting an abortion, but she decided to continue with the pregnancy"

Yea, my jaw dropped when I read that part... who even thinks that that's ok?!?!

  • I fully admit that I hope that number three will be a girl. I may even try to shettle it. If it is another boy, though, that is fine. At least I have little boys figured out. And I'll just have to start knitting pink sweaters for Shadow at that point.... ;-)

Seriously though, they considered the abortion of a healthy baby because it was a boy and she changed jobs because she didn't want to be around women having girls? That woman has issues.

  • We offered "family balancing" in the fertility clinic where I worked before DS. Most of the people who had it done had several children on the same sex, and really wanted one of the opposite sex before they were done having kids. There were a few cases where it was a childless couple/person who preferred one sex over the other, but that was rare. They all had to undergo a psych evaluation before we would work with them. They could either have the sperm sample sorted to greatly improve their chances to have the sex they wanted, or do PGD. In PGD they do IVF and examine the embryos before transferring them back. They are able to tell the sex of the embryo, as well as if it appears genetically normal. There were a few cases where the patient wanted one sex, but only ended up with healthy embryos of the non-preferred sex. In all of those cases they went ahead with the transfer, because in the end they would still rather have a healthy baby. Luckily we never had a patient who was so dead set against a sex that they would consider abortion. Honestly, I had trouble working with those cases. It's hard to see healthy fertile couples being picky about the sex of their child while also working with so many couples who would give anything to have any child at all.
  • This also bothered me:

"For Jennifer Merrill Thompson, the reasons were simple. ?I?m not into sports. I?m not into violent games. I?m not into a lot of things boys represent and boys do,? she said. Thompson is the author of Chasing the Gender Dream, a self-published book that documents her use of gender-selection technology to conceive her daughter."

Not all boys are into sports or violent games.  Many girls are interested in those things.  Way to stereotype, lady.

That is wrong on so many levels. I read the first page and couldn't read anymore. Shame on these women! There are so many people who want babies and can't have them and these women are able to conceive healthy babies and would consider aborting because they'd rather have a girl?!? It is so sad that this procedure is legal in the US.

This just makes me so, so sad for her boys.  Sad  I read the whole article and I cannot believe that this woman won't make it known exactly who she favors all of her kids' lives.

Yes. I thought this too. Her poor boys :(

  • She seems way mentally unbalanced.  Her poor sons.  I want to kick her in the teeth.

This is exactly what I was thinking as well. DH and I were hoping for a boy but if it was a girl we would have been just as thrilled. I feel horrible for this woman's boys, and I am sure her favoritism of girls will be made known in some way to her boys, even if it is not being as involved with them, etc. This is sad.

    She got her girl.

I'm glad it cost her that much ($40,000). Eff her. I get the idea of wanting a boy or girl, but to literally be sick over it or considering abort etc makes me so furious. Get over it. It just makes me so sad for her other kids :(

This is the other part that got me - where she laid in bed crying for weeks.  Umm, how about you take care of your healthy little boy?!  WTF.  It made me so sad for her son.

I posted a judgement day post a couple weeks ago about a girl I know who isn't that far off from these women.  Of course I secretly hope she has another boy!

  • This is horrible! Speaking as a person who spent a very large amount of money on fertility treatments and praised god that I have a healthy child ( and would have been happy with either sex) it is so sad that people do things like this. Any child, any gender is a blessing. It is also sad that people like this give PGD a bad name. PGD is a wonderful tool that people with real issues can use to help them have a famil. Guess it just goes to show that people can pay for anything these days.

  • I wonder how much attention her boys get now. Sad sad sad.

  • I didn't read the article but my mom had a friend that had three boys and did gender selection for the fourth in hopes for a girl. They got a boy anyway.

  • This women should be ashamed of herself and I feel sad for all her children. We spent thousands of dollars to conceive our child and we were given the option of gender selection and it never once crossed our minds to do it. We didn't care!

  • Wow, I'm not even going to read that trash.  It gives people who use PGD for legitimate medical reasons a bad rep.  Everyone I know who has had to use PGD during infertility treatments for purely medical reasons was never given the option of which they were going to put back.  They put back the best, healthiest ones.  Some of my friends have known the sex(es) of the embryo(s) they have left in the freezer, but aren't given any choice in which ones go back... that's for the doctor to decide.

All of this! I am appalled by the whole abortion thing. Also, her poor, poor boys! If DS had been another DD we would have tried again for a DS. However, if a potential #3 was also a girl we would be done and happy with 3 girls. I wouldn't even think to do gender selection for a boy. Did I want a boy and a girl, yes... would I have paid for it? NO! Would I have aborted if I didn't get those sexes? NO! This makes me sick...

I kind of wish this women would have had another boy. But then I think of those poor boys, it is probably for the best now, so she can move on and buy all her pink.

  • I can't imagine what a healthy family they will be when the children are old enough to know all of this.

I envision one spoiled little girl. hopefully her brothers dont hate or resent her since she was everything her parents wanted when they clearly weren't enough.

I guess it will suck if she ends up playing softball instead of with Barbie dolls, then what does the mom do?

  • I hope her girl grows up to be a tomboy and hates all things frilly and stereotypically girly!

  • I feel terrible for her sons.  How must they feel knowing they "weren't good enough" and she was so desperate for a daughter she considered aborting one of them after she found out he was a boy!? Holy. Poor kids.
