s/o preterm labor

when I went in for contractions Tuesday at 33w 5d my OB said they wouldn't try to stop preterm labor at this point as they felt the risks were minimal- anyone else's dr have a policy like this?

(I should note I was entirely comfortable with this, babies tend to go early in my family and no one has issues)

Re: s/o preterm labor

  • I was surprised to hear my doc say that they wouldn't try and stop labor for me after 34 weeks. Really?! 2 weeks of NICU time?

ETA: My brother was born in 1988 and my mom went into labor at 36 weeks and they stopped her labor. My how things have changed.

just bc the babies come at 34 weeks doesn't mean NICU. I was born at 34 weeks and just was a bit jaundiced and cold. I was out in normal time (and this was in the 70s)

If you look it up you usually hear horror stories only bc few people will write about their totally fine baby

  • I asked at my 36w appt and they said they wouldn't try to stop it at that point, but I didn't ask how early they would let it go.

  • My OB's policy is similar. They won't try to stop it once you hit 34/35w.

  • Wow this is enlightening. When I went in with cramping at 34 weeks 2 days they indicated they would still try to stop labor until 36 weeks I believe.

My dr has the same policy.  I'm glad that I've had my steroid shots.  My dr said that between 34-36 week babies learn to suck and breath at the same time.  The reason babies are often in the NICU when born this early is to learn how to feed without forgetting to breath.

  • Same goes for my doctors. I have been having contractions on and off and this past tuesday was back in the hospital. I was 34 weeks wednesday. She said it's in a grey area right now cause the benefits of giving the drugs at this point don't really out way the risk.  She is having me stay home for a few days to get to 35 weeks so I am more out of the risk zone I guess.

  • I was told this would be the case at 36 weeks (today!) but at 33w, 5 days that seems a bit early IMO but then again I'm considered high risk so I'm not sure if that would have anything to do with it?

  • My OB and hospital won't stop labour after 34 weeks either. When I went in at 33 weeks 5 days, they just gave me steroid shots to help develop baby boy's lungs.

  • My OB didnt say that until last week (about 36wks).

  • I had originally been told my practice wouldn't stop it after 34 weeks. During w33 I received steroid injections for their lungs and was told it wouldn't be stopped at that point.

Ive since been told by my office had it been strong enough, they would not have taken extra steps to stop it beyond 32 weeks but that's only with twins, otherwise they go with 34 weeks.

Ive been told several times I will not make it to my next goal (32,34,36) but here's we are looking extremely likely to make it to the c/s Wednesday at 36w2d.

  • I had spotting at 29 weeks and got steroid shots.  Because of this at my 34w/2d appointment, my little guy measured 5lbs 6oz and said they would not try to stop labor from there on out!  I'll be 37 weeks this weekend he's still cooking!  But it was very nice to know that my doctor was ok with him being born at any point now.

  • My doctor also stated that they will not stop labor at 34 weeks. I went in at 33w6d for contractions and they stated they would not try to stop since it was so close. Luckily, the contractions haven't made cervical change.

  • At my hospital it is mandatory NICU under 35 weeks.  I went in for ds #1 at 34 weeks my water hand broken and I was progressing quickly - they didn't try to stop anything - he spent a week in the NICU  no serious complications.  With this LO I started having contractions again at 34 weeks  - not dilated - they gave me 3 shots of tributaline to stop contractions - if that didn't work they wouldn't have done anything else.  Now I'm 35 weeks there is no trying to stop my contractions I don't even have to go in unless they are really painful. I dailly have an hour of 2 of contractions 3 -5 minutes apart.

  • While I was half doped up on some laboring stopping meds the other day in the hospital, my doc mentioned something about it being a LAW that 34 weeks was the cut off for stopping labor.  She made it seem like no one was allowed to try to stop it at that point? I dont understand that...if you can stop it, why not try?

my GUESS is that the risks of stopping labor outweigh the benefits at that point.

I mean even babies born at 40+ weeks can end up in NICU

I'm double posting too...I think the bump is acting up.  You are probably right about the risks.  I guess I'm only considering risks to baby, and not really risks to mama.  And 34 weeks isnt all that early, but it def increases chances of NICU time.  I never really thought of stopping labor being risky until right now.  Maybe I ought to do some research.

  • I just had to take a trip to L&D on weds. for contractions and breathing issues and my OB said the exact same thing. I wasn't aware that this was their policy. Good to know though, I guess.lol

  • I went into the hospital thinking (falsely) my water had broken at exactly 35 weeks and was told once you hit 35 weeks they don't do anything to stop it.  they would though, at 34 weeks and 6 days.

  • Sounds like it's been common to have some contractions/pre-term labor at 33 weeks. I definitely did not consider that a possibility. I also had pre-term contractions (4 hrs pretty intense, 4 hrs mild contracting but mostly under control, only dilated 1 cm.) the evening of my 33 wk check up.

Last week when I went in at 35 weeks for a checkup I was told from 34.5 weeks on they wouldn't do anything to stop it. After the pre-term scare though, I was also given steroid shots. 37 weeks today and baby seems like he is hanging onto his womb home pretty good, though I've had contractions sporadically for the last 4 weeks, including some bad back ones this morning.

  • DS #1 was born at 33 4. My water broke and by the time they checked me I was 4 cm dilated so they didn't attempt to stop labor. We spent two weeks in the NICU and the only reason was so he could learn to suck, swallow and breathe at the same time.

This time I tested positive for fFN at 29 weeks and got the steroid shots. My MFM told me that once I had the shots they would not try to stop labor.  Because I've been throu this once already, I'm mentally prepared to have a preemie and possible time in the NICU.

  • This post is making me want to have my freaking baby already. Hopefully tomorrow the doctors will agree.
