Those who follow the 90 minute rule...

When does the 90 minutes increase?  I started the 90 minute thing a few weeks back and it worked like a charm.  After about 80-90minutes of awake time X would start yawning and rubbing his eyes and i'd put him in his crib and out he went for 45mintues.  He did this about 4 times a day right on the 80-90minute mark.  Not so much anymore.... the last few days it's been more like 2-2.5hrs of awake time.  He started being fussy at 90 minutes just now so I tried to put him down and he wanted nothing to do with it.  He's playing quietly now on his playmat chewing on Sophie and it's been 2h18min.  Is this normal?  He's just about 6 months old.  I'm not sure if it's normal for his age to increase his awake time or if he's just teething.

  • I was following the 90 minute rule until a few weeks ago. Now I use:

90 min for first morning wake time

1 hour 45 minutes for subsequent wake times (usually 2 of these wake periods)

no napping after 5:45 for 8:00 bedtime

  • At some age most babies start to naturally stretch out there naps and settle at 2 longer naps.  I think at 6 months he could easily be starting that process.

My daycare thinks my LO is getting ready to do that and they are starting the process for me, woot!  She did 3 longerish naps yesterday when she usually does 4 short ones.  I cannot wait until LO is taking 2 long naps a day, the 20-40 minute ones are killing me, I can't get anything done in that timeframe!

  • yes it's normal to increase awake time. DD is at about 2 hours between naps now, but I watch for sleepy cues. She can usually only catnap in the morning though with the other activities we do, and then will take a long nap in the afternoon and sometimes an early evening one.
