Sleep training is absolutely no fun....

I've finally broken and I'm trying a modified version of CIO (3 minute intervals)...

Eden fell asleep after about....25 minutes of me going in and out, rubbing her chest/back, and cuddling with her teddy bear, all while crying...but now she's doing this super sad "double" breathing thing that kids do after they cry. I hate hearing it on my monitor. Totally makes me feel like an a-s-s.

Anyone else have a kid that does this? Or did I do something wrong to extra upset her?

He does it too, it Is such a sad noise and it breaks my heart. I hope tomorrow night is better!

Thanks, ladies! I really hope this works. I would hate to do this to her and not even accomplish what we're aiming for....but its already a last resort. Hopefully that sound fades with time.

When is it advised to start sleep training? Am I the only one that still jumps at her first whine? I don't want to start some bad habits.

If you are stuck and things aren't improving, you could give the No-Cry Sleep Solution a try. Jack had to be nursed to sleep before--HAD to--and we are a week in and he's going to sleep on his own now. I made a thread about it a few posts down.

I don't jump at his first wine. I only go in if he is full on crying. I don't know if it is ever "advised" to start--I think it is suggested if that's what you want to do. Some people never "sleep train", some do. Different strokes, I think.

Moral of the story, I think it is up to you.

Yes, it does suck. But if you're serious about removing sleep associations for DD then you should stick with it. By all means if the parents are happy nursing to sleep or rocking or whatever, then those people wouldn't sleep train. We definitely reached a point with DS1 that he was waking up so often and relying on us to put him back to sleep that we said, enough. It didn't take long at all and it was the best thing we did for his sleep. By the 3rd day he was soothing himself to sleep and didn't cry at all. If you've made the decision, then try to hang in there! it will be worth it, imo.

Haha! I understood what you were trying to say. I'm pretty happy with her sleep patterns thus far so I don't think we are going to change anything at the moment.

I jump at first whine, but she never whines. she yells when I'm in the shower and I know she's tired, because I put her paci in and asleep instantly. maybe the lack of crying/whining will all change when I move her to her own room. and into her crib....

Fussy Etta does that breathing thing a lot. She gets herself worked up over crazy things. I think she's going to be my drama queen.

Hang in there! I promise it does get easier if you stick with it and remain 100% consistent. She will be okay, although I hear you on how heart wrenching those cries are. The first night I was sick to my stomach hearing her cry like that. But it just got easier and she cried less and less each day. Both my pedi and OB said Ferber is okay - actually the recommended it when I explained how hard bedtime was. So, with the medical professional green light, we did it. I can't tell you how much happier I am now that she can put herself to sleep. I was a ball of stress at bedtime until we did the program. Now, she can soothe herself by sucking her fingers and goes to sleep with either absolutely no crying or only occasionally a minute or two of protesting. It does get better! Hang in there.
