I have called 23 preschools. TWENTY THREE.
Guess how many are willing to work with us since P isn't/can't be potty trained..
TWO.
Coincidentally those 2 places have a program for 2 year olds, and most 2 year olds are not potty trained. They also said if she stayed there until she was 4 they would not be able to accommodate her.
Problems with these 2..
Place 1 is actually a daycare, that has a 9-12 'preschool' based program..Except at 9 they do snack and at 11 they do lunch so I'm really not sure how much 'preschool' she's getting. To pay $200/month for 6 hours a week for her to play with other kids is VERY excessive and not exactly in our budget. She will also be the only child leaving at 12 since it's actually daycare so that sucks too.
Place 2 is church based, and fairly religious. I am not religious and am having a hard time being OK with throwing her into christian based curriculum when I don't personally believe in it. Do I sacrifice my own beliefs so that she can grow socially and emotionally? What do I do when she's asking me about Jesus and GOD I wasn't exactly prepared to have to deal with this quite yet. They are inter-denominational in teachings but say blessing before snacks and all music is biblical. We were there for the good-bye song and it was "say goodbye to X...GOD loves you." Cost $125/month for 2 days/week + $140 reg & supply. ..Not as bad..
It's also an hour away. If we were going to do church based, I'd rather not drive an hour to it. What do I do for the 3 hours before driving the hour back home? It will be time for Morgan's breakfast.
I'm again, super unhappy that no one was willing to work with us, AT ALL. One person had the audacity to say "how awful" our life must be but they couldn't help us. A CO OP based school that is run solely by parents of kids who attend it said no. Hope they never have a child with special needs.
I talked with our educator contact at the spina bifida clinic and she spent all week working on this, she came up completely empty handed with anyone in the area who could help us.
To say i'm frustrated again would be an understatement. I wanted to cry the other day. To have our first real world issue of her being treated differently because of her medical conditions is..awful. It's just an awful feeling. To feel like I can do NOTHING to protect her or show these people that she is amazing despite the fact she can't pee in a toilet!
At this point I do not know what we are going to do. =(
***UPDATE
I called the daycare place and got an exact idea of the daily schedule, etc. I also asked some other questions, about how many teachers their were. The room peyton would be in is shared with the 3's and they have 1 teacher for each. I saw the kids during nap time the other day..their was A LOT of them. So 1 teacher, no assistant had me nervous that if Peyton was upset (especially in the beginning, their really would be no one to comfort her). The church program has max 10 kids in the room, and a teacher + assistant.
I was going back and forth about which place is better for Peyton, etc. I would lean towards one..and go to the other. Well, I found the daycare place on the dept of social services website, and EVERY single time they have had an inspection they have had multiple violations, like more than 5. This was the list from June's inspection..The inspection from Oct 2011 had background check issues & 8 violations. So now I'm really NOT feeling comfortable with her going there.

Re: pre-school vent..again! **update..ish
This is so crappy! What about the county board of DD? They don't have a program? That's where DS has gone for day care and where kids can go for preschool if they qualify. There has got to be a place for kids with medical needs.
If not, can she be a tuition paying typical student through the school district?
UGH I am sure you have thought of all of this. I just can't believe this. So wrong!
Maybe the board of DD can hook you up with a disabilities lawyer to help you see what your rights are. I can't believe that with the ADA she can be denied access to preschool.
This is the page on our preschool requirements, etc.
https://www.doe.virginia.gov/special_ed/early_childhood/index.shtml
They do not offer neuro typical 2 year old programs, they let a limited number of NT students into their 3 year old program but it's based on some secret they haven't let me in on yet, as I had never heard of this, at all. They did say they would try to get her on the list for that next year.
County board of DD...disability director? sorry what is the DD? lol
Our entire county and surrounding counties have no private special needs daycares or schools, nothing exists here.
Board of Developmental Disabilities-- like the county place that serves the needs of all people with DDs. There should be some sort of county organization that helps people, although I know VA is kind of weird with the commonwealth stuff, etc.
I agree with Auntie that I think people will get to know her and realize what an asset she is to the classroom (not to mention person deserving equal rights!?!?!). I have started DS at a typical daycare this fall and the county DD board (again, lol) has a program to facilitate that. They come in and train the staff at the day care and have suggested and helped with modifications to the classroom and class materials. They even created social storybooks for DS to get ready to go there. I really wanted him to stay at the special needs day care, but it just wasn't going to work. And now that he is part of this program and the daycare is embracing him, it has been such a blessing. At first when I went in there I know we freaked them out. But they are really enjoying him (I think! LOL) and starting to stop being afraid of him (fear of him having a seizure or getting hurt). Once you start to work with someone, they don't stay "the seizure kid who gets meds in his butt". They become a dear child you care about. And I am sure this would happen with your sweet Peyton!
Have you tried just going in to local places you have heard good things about? Over the phone you get the twit who just repeats the party line" They gotta be potty trained". In person you could talk to a manager about the special circumstance and they could see how advanced and adorable Peyton is.
Something similar happened to us with DS' baby pics. My sister got me this deal where you get the baby's pic taken every 3 months for the first year. The baby is supposed to be doing a different milestone in each one-- tummy, seated, standing, etc. The photog was a real d*ck who got obviously irritated that we brought DS in before he could do those things (he is just standing now at almost 3!). We finally just stopped going. I was so angry, though. Some people just don't get it.
(((hugs)))
God, I'm so sorry. **hugs**
I think if there was any way to do it, I'd go for the $200 a month place.
Have you looked at parks and recreation departments? I know around here, some of them actually have preschool programs and they're often the most reasonably-priced options, but not necessarily listed in the phone book as a preschool, KWIM?
The other thing they have at the rec centers are enrichment-type programs (art or music, etc.) for the toddler and preschool set -- so they're used to dealing with non-PT'd kids. Both DD1 and DD2 have done toddler classes that are sort of pre-preschool, through different rec departments; one of them was okay with changing diapers, the other was not, so I had to stay on-site while DD2 was there. But it was close to home, with childcare for DD1; and I could work out or bring my computer and have some me-time while being on-call for DD2.
Even if a rec center preschool isn't an option, maybe you could cobble together a series of enrichment classes that would get her the social experience you're looking for. It wouldn't be the same as preschool, but it might be close.
I don't know, I hope that might be helpful. God, how frustrating and upsetting.
DD1, 1/5/2008 ~~~ DD2, 3/17/2010
I'm so sorry--that must be so frustrating
I live in Loudoun County in VA, and I send my DD to a preschool based at our local community center. I don't know if you have any county-run community centers that offer preschool in your area, but I feel like they would be willing to work with you if they understood your situation a little better.
I pay $335/month, and DD goes every day from 12:30-3:00. I don't think $200/month is that bad, and I agree with Auntie about snack and lunch time being good social opportunities for preschool kids. Also, if you factor in the cost of gas for the one that's an hour away, the monthly costs of the two places might not end up being all that different. I hear you on the budget worries. It sucks to feel like you have to limit your child's experiences over a couple hundred dollars a month. It's something DH and I talk about all the time because of how expensive DD's OT is.
I am so sorry!
This happened to us over a year ago and I got a recommendation to a daycare when DS was kicked out of one daycare and we tried to move him to a different one where he lasted a week. Pretty much they both were not willing to work with a special needs child.
I understand how this would hurt. I am mad that it is this much harder for us for our children to be accepted.
That's an hour & a half away..and with going north on 95, their could be some mornings we never get there lol (depending on whats going on..which is usually something!)
I checked with parks & rec for our county and the boarding county/city..nothing. I think $335 is a lot lol it's more than one of our car payments! We only have one income..My reasoning behind thinking that $200/month is a lot is when the majority of the preschools who said no to us are from $90-115 a month with just a registration fee and no supply fee, etc. So in comparison to those, it's more. The church program is $125/month plus $140 supply & registration.
I don't really think most places have any leeway to work with us though because it's in their license that they can't deal with diapers/pull ups.
Also I think looking at $22/day for 3 hours vs $35 for a full day from 6am to 6pm is what seems excessive as well. I considered doing two full days and being able to work those days but I work in a different county like 1.5 hours away from those places too. Gah!
I am so sorry. How frustrating.
The school where I sent my daughter and now my son would have been perfect for you. I wish you lived in MA! It is housed in a church but is not church-based/religious at all. We take non-PT kids, and there is no age limit by which they have to be PT. A few of the 4 year olds in my DD's class were not yet, for whatever reason, and the school had no problem with it. We also offer tuition scholarships and it's a bit cheaper to start because it's a parent co-op. It sounds like you have tried everything, but I hope maybe just maybe a place like this turns up for you guys.
In PA? I just think that's outrageous! That's the price of some places FULL TIME daycare! If I was working it would be fine, but then again if I were working we would have them in a place that had an educational curriculum. But, I don't work and they couldn't really handle much more than 3 hours 2 days/week anyway with appointments, etc. I'm just thinking how we would afford that for TWO! Plus they don't usually give multi sibling discounts for part-time preschool.
The county I work in has a program for $90/month but Peyton is too young. I'm still debating sending her to the church place vs. working with her for a year and then getting a neurotypical spot next year/having more options when she is 3. But really, she will be almost 4 and very possibly cathing by then, so I do not know.
I don't even personally know anyone whose older 2/younger 3 goes to preschool I just feel like it would benefit her.
I wish I could decide what I want to do! lol
I'm sorry, it seems so unfair.
Zeus and Bubba
Is that for 9-12?! That's outrageous! Either way it's outrageous. The majority of larger daycare places here are $30-$35/day and thats if you DON'T do a full week where you get a discount. I wouldn't say Fredericksburg is really LCOL either, but I guess moreso than some other areas in VA.
