Induction date...what do you think?

My doctor's office called a little bit ago to say that they have to confirm with the hospital but that the date they are looking at to induce me is Dec 26th. when she is on call at the hospital.

This is less than a week away from my due date. At first they were talking about inducing me at 38 weeks. I told the nurses that if it is that close to my due date I'd rather just wait until I actually go into labor unless I have a major issue with high BP or something else.

The nurse said she'd check with the doctor about this but plan on that being my induction date.

Now the reason my doctor said for inducing me is because I have a blood clotting disorder which I have been on blood thinners and potential to have high BP.  I am stopping the blood thinners at 37 weeks so in case I go into labor on my own and want an Epi I can do so w/o a risk.  My BP has been great for quiet some time and it hasn't shown any signs of going up at all. It's conistantly been around 110/68-70.

I guess I just feel like I need more of a reason to be induced.

  • I totally understand.... being induced isn't fun..

  • I don't mean to sound too practical or anything... but having the baby in 2008 means that you get to claim him/her on your taxes!!!  HUGE plus.

Go for the induction, girl.  WOOT!

  • I would decline at this time.

  • LOL doodle,  you sound like my DH.  He keeps telling me " I don't know why this is such a big deal to you. If we have the baby in December we can save like $3000 on our taxes."

  • I'm sorry, that's a tough decision to have to make. Ultimately you have to make sure that both you and baby are healthy.
  • I would see how you feel and what the doctor says after you go off the blood thinners.  Def let him know that you would rather let things happen naturally, but you might not feel that way once you are off the medication.

Doodle brings up a very good point as well.  Big Smile

  • Yeah, I agree with you. I'm 100% anti-induction unless there is a REALLY good reason. I

  • Jasonswife's computer is st-st-stu-stuttering.

  • Schwandy I am in the same boat as you! Ask your doctor about heparin - my doctor is going to switch me to heparin around 36 weeks so that I can still get an epi. and not have to be induced unless there's another reason to do so.?

  • If you don't feel like there is a good reason, then don't do it.  Of course you will if your bp goes up, or other indications are that something is off.  But otherwise, I guess I don't know enough about the meds to understand why you need to induce once off them if your BP doesn't shoot up.

  • I would just wait and see how it goes once you're off your medication.  I would think that being induced could put more stress on your body and your BP, than if you went into labor when your body was actually ready.
  • I'd want more of a reason to be induced, too. Honestly, it sounds suspiciously like that date is convenient for your Dr. JMO, but personally I wouldnt want to be induced unless there was a good medical reason.?

?Which hospital are you delivering at btw? One of the "dales"??

  • I think it sounds to me like you don't want to induce unless it's necessary. So, tell your doctor that. Go of the meds. See how it goes.

  • I vote no induction, unless you move it to like the 27th or 28th. I have three friends whose birthdays are the 26th of December and all of them say that it's the world's worst birthdate b/c you get tons of "combined" birthday/Christmas presents or birthday presents wrapped in Christmas paper... or your birthday just plain forgotten in the hustle and bustle.

Aside from that (admittedly ridiculous) reason, I'm in the "no inductions unless it's medically necessary and your body is in a favorable position for induction" camp.

  • And I have no idea what your insurance coverage is, but that $3000 deduction might not mean a whole lot if you end up with a c-section and your out of pocket expenses increase :( ?My insurance was 90/10 and after my c-section, we had to pay $3K out of pocket (which was our max cap). Since the risk of c-section increases with inductions, that's something to at least consider.?
  • I'm with those who are in the "wait and see" camp.  I know that I don't want to be induced unless it's a medical necessity, and it sounds like you could end up that way.  But, without knowing you'll end up that way first, I wouldn't want to be induced "just because."  Also, it sounds like you have a workable plan that your doctor should be open to hearing (going off the meds, waiting and seeing).

     Good luck!

  • You need to do what you feel is best but honestly I was induced with my first and loved it.  I was a couple days over due and the dr. said if I had gone much longer DS would have been too big and I would of had to have a c-section.  Inducing isn't as bad as many are making it sound.

  • Emilie,

No I am delivering at Woodwinds. It's closer to our house than any of the 'dales.
