Tongue Tied?

Anyone else have to deal with the issue of LO's tongue being tied down to the bottom of his/her mouth and not able to stick their tongue out past their bottom lip? Found out DD has this at her 2 day post hospital check and we have an appt on the 19th to get it snipped so that she can latch for breastfeeding better. In the meantime, we're having to supplement/finger feed her milk until we know that she can get enough from my breasts. Anyone else experience the clipping procedure or the tongue tie?

Re: Tongue Tied?

  • My LO just had his tongue clipped. At our ENT Doctor he talked to me about it asked if I wanted to do it now and I said yes and he did it right there. They do it with a pair of scissors and it bleeds a little bit. LO does not even really act like anything happened. He is much better now, he drools a lot more but I am fine with that.

I decided to do it now because it will help with speech in the future. I have heard from a few people that had to do it with their 5 y.o or older and it was awful. They have to go into the hospital and be put out for the procedure.

  • Speech impairments are a big one for me too. I'd rather it be a small thing now than a big ordeal later. Good to know that it helped! My niece has it as well and my SIL didn't do it because she didn't think it would make much of a difference. Any kind of difference would be wonderful for me! I'm trying to keep her off a bottle at all costs so my husband and I are doing pinky finger/tube feeding in the meantime. It's nice that DH gets to feed her in these early stages but my breasts could use a rest from the pump!

  • DDs latch was really painful so the pediatrician clipped hers while we were still at the hospital. It only took a minute and she didn't seem to mind. Her latch was better right away.

  • My mother and brother both had this issue and had it corrected later in life.  My brother has his done in high school.  The tip of his tongue couldn't leave his mouth.  He never had a speech impediment.  My mom formula fed but feedings weren't an issue.  The procedure was more complicated and required anesthesia, but it was still quick, and he had a quick recovery.  So if you decided to wait because it isn't affecting LO too much, it still can work out just fine.
