Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Intro and question

Hi everyone.  I just wanted to say hello to everyone.  I am coming over from the 6-9 month board.  My question is how long do you keep feeding purees?  I try and give them small chunks of food, but they seem to gag as they are chewing on it.  I cook the food so it will mash very easily in their mouth.  Should I keep trying with the chunks even though they gag?

Re: Intro and question

  • My kids never really liked the purees, they preferred table food. I stopped at about 9months. I would just keep trying with soft foods.

  • My DS is 11.5 months and I'm still doing purees!  My pedi told me we could start introducing more "real" food as long as it was chopped very finely (she said like as small as zipper teeth) back at the 9 month appointment.  My LO only has 2 teeth so I've been hesitant to give anything that requires chewing.

  • We never gave purees, started with table food at 6 months, but the gagging is going to happen no matter when you introduce table food.  Their gag reflex is at the very front of the tongue and won't move back until they start eating real foods.  When you feed purees, you literally bypass the gag reflex by putting the food at the back of the mouth.
