Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Whiney Baby Syndrome

My 10 month old has been whiney all week. What gives? She wants to be picked up then she wants to be put down. If you go more than 3 feet away from her she freaks out. She is normally fine playing in her playroom while I get some housework done, but not the case lately. She wants full attention. She has her 2 front bottom teeth and getting those in was very painful. She does keep jabbing her finger in her mouth, so I am thinking maybe she is just getting ready to get more teeth in. I am worried it could be formula since I have been in the weaning process. I just wish she could tell me what's buggin her!! At what point do I take a 'whiney' baby to the doctor? Am I missing something ya think?

  • DS does this when he's sick. Not saying that your LO is sick, but for my LO it is a warning sign. She could just be going through a growth spurt, or separation anxiety could be kicking in. I only take DS to the doctor if he's running a fever, has bad diarrhea, or pulls at his ears badly.

  • Ugh! I hear ya! My DS has been doing this too! Probably teeth and separation anxiety. I can't even stand up and stretch without a freak out! Can you give her something new to explore? A bowl of water to dump, paper to tear?

  • Teething? I think it is pretty normal. We will hear a lot of whining for a couple years. Help! lol

  • If I gave her paper to rip, she would eat it. Huh?

I'll have my parents help tonight. Thank the Lord for loving grandparents!!

This. DS got a hold of some paper this morning, tried to eat it, gagged, and projectile vomited his entire breakfast.

  • If no fever or other symptoms of illness I would guess separation anxiety or teething. We are currently dealing with both at our house. I hear that it does get better although I can't tell you exactly when Sad

  • The syndrome started at our house around 13 months... he's 15mo now and it seems to be getting a little better. He is generally happier (now that he can walk too), but still has the separation anxiety pretty bad. I also used to be able to stay with earshot and he was fine, but now I must be several feet away or he cries. I'm hoping it goes back to normal soon...!
