NO sleep training?

Forgive me if I sound completely incompetent...but is it possible not to sleep train? Even if your LO does still wake up a bunch at night.  We technically do the 90 min sleep program, but that mainly applies to daytime naps.  I was just hoping eventually she would get on a normal schedule on her own without sleep training.  Any 2+ moms had a LO that did have sleep problems but didnt have to do some sort of sleep training and it corrected itself?  If so, how long did it take?

Re: NO sleep training?

  • If you do not mind getting up, you don't need to sleep train.  For John, we just sleep trained for bed time, as he would only nurse to sleep, and if he was not hungry, he just got cranky and overtired.  We never sleep trained for MOTN wakings.  I just nursed him and he went back to sleep.  When we switched to WCM at one year, he started STTN no problem.

As long as your LO is learning to self-soothe at some point, and you are not being sleep deprived, do what ever you want to do.  I was told not to nurse to sleep, but I did it anyway.  John is now almost 3, and he goes to bed just fine with our bedtime routine, with only the occasional wakeup from a nightmare.

  • Thanks so much for your input.  This is pretty much the boat I am in.  I nurse to sleep, and nurse during MOTN waking.  I am really not too bad off, she wakes 3-4 times a night, but goes right back to sleep.  I mean, yes Im tired, but not to the point of insanity.  We are working on right now her being OK with not being nursed to sleep as I am not home Monday nights for bed time.  Hopefully it will help her out.
  • My LO I feed at least once, sometimes twice during the night. I nurse to sleep often, but there are times he falls asleep in the swing or with others as I am not home. If he wakes up a third time, I usually ignore him/give him a pacifer to quite. He is little and I think he needs to eat at night still. Hoping there are some others that are not "sleep training".
  • We're not contemplating it yet.  Pilar wakes up once or twice a night which isn't to bad.  I think that once she eats solids she will stop waking up so much.

  • I'm a FTM too so I don't have any experience as a 2+ mom but I just wanted to let you know that we're not sleep training either. I don't mind getting up with her at night (she usually only wakes up once or twice, once in awhile three times). I was telling my mom that it seemed like everyone I know irl and on the boards is sleep training and she assured me that both my sister and I fell into a normal schedule at night and for naps with no training.

  • We didn't. It was on the table for after the one year mark if necessary, but this first year they're learning so much and growing so much waking up at night is normal. DD was BAD, too. Like up 3-4 times a night and wouldn't go back to sleep right away. 10 months seems to be a fairly common time for sleep to improve naturally after the 9 month wakeful/growth spurt. 2 days before her birthday she started STTN. We had a few disruptions when she got molars and around the 15 month wonder week, but otherwise she has slept great since the year mark. She always sucked to sleep, whether bottle or breast, so when she weaned around the 15 month point we did no cry sleep training and in less than 2 weeks she was going to bed on her own.

  • I am FTM too and not sleep training. DS has STTN the last two nights. I'm hoping this is it for me for MOTN but if it's not, no biggie.

  • I woke up with H to nurse until she outgrew each feeding. The 4am feeding stuck around a loooong time but we went back to sleep afterwards and it worked for us. After a year is typically when non CIO "experts" condone, but in no way insist upon, night weaning. The Dr. Jay Gordon method of night weaning is usually what the extended breastfeeding non CIO crowd use, but again it is suitable after 1.

This does NOT mean you won't be sleeping more sooner than that. For us WIO (wait it out) worked. If that doesn't eventually work with this baby I'll consider Gordon's methods.
