I think conservatives are famous for being considered close minded but in reality, I think everyone actually is.
I find it funny that people get so worked up because I may personally not believe or agree with something but these people also have so strong beliefs that they seriously can't stop and think I may not believe or think the exact same way they do.
This isn't a point and blame because it's directed at no one particular, not on the Internet at least. Plus, like I said, I think it affects everyone, not a specific group. Double plus, I think it's great when you have such strong beliefs, even if I don't agree with them!!
I guess I'll start!

I'll agree with this...to an extent. I am more liberal than conservative, however on some things (eg- illegal immigration) I am highly conservative. Where I find myself calling self-proclaimed conservatives "close minded" is when they start to spread hatred towards others. The biggest example of this in current society is obviously in the LGBT community. I don't care about conservatives that simply don't agree... everyone is entitled to their opinion. But alarmingly enough, many of the conservatives don't just say "I don't agree", but go further into why they feel it's wrong, why they don't think marriage is acceptable.... and generally spread hate about the issue. They are the ones who get defensive almost immediately (perhaps because they know they are the minority?) Anyways... that's just MHO
I will agree, however, that "liberals" can be just as close-minded. Just because we use the term liberal to describe them doesn't mean they are open-minded. just because someone doesn't have the same view as you doesn't make it wrong. When I was in college, I did see lots of this "conservative bashing" as well... especially considering I was one of the few who DIDN'T vote for Obama. (But at least I voted). Someone not having the same views as you doesn't necessarily make them a conservative.

I agree that there's a lot of intolerance on both sides of the spectrum. However, I have a problem with oppression in the name of one particular brand of religion. This nation was founded on religious freedom, and one religious group should not be able to force their values on the entire country (or state). Atheists, Muslims, Buddhists and Agnostics are Americans, too. Also, hatred and intolerance are not valid opinions, and we cannot 'agree to disagree' on matters of civil rights.
I think that when a women is taking birth control pills (not out of medical necessity) but then going out of her way to buy organic foods (esp. meats and dairy) that she is being hypocritical. Why should she go to such lengths to avoid hormones and chemicals in your food and the voluntarily take them every day in pill form?

I don't think most women that do this even make that connection. They don't know that it is hypocritical because they are ignorant.

I guess I don't exactly fit into this category, most of the things I buy organic is produce, not meat or dairy, but I don't see that it's hypocritical to avoid completely pointless, and to me, disgusting hormones and chemicals and still take hormones for a reason.

I don't understand why it's hypocritical to make some "good" choices in life and some "bad" ones. Just because you're taking BCP or drinking diet coke (me) doesn't mean that you shouldn't bother buying organic. It's not all or nothing. With every choice, we weigh the pros and cons.

I get your point. And agree with PP that most people just don't connect organic vs. BCP. (I assume most see it as: non organic food = chemicals! BCP is just medicine (good!)!)
But honestly, I was on BCP for 7-ish years b/c DH and I weren't ready for kids and while I didn't have any adverse reactions to BCP that I could tell (I know a lot of people complain of BCP side effects), I don't think I'll ever go back on them. (We use, ahem, other methods until we TTC again, but honestly, those other methods - while not hormonal - aren't awesome. When we are done, DH will probably get the snip-snip.)
My point? IMO, other birth control kinda sucks. If there was a better, short term, non-hormonal method of BC, I'd be all over it. But BCPs were so easy! I think it's about making choices and what works better for you at the time...
Re: Any UO today?
Not anything currently... I'm boring today...
But then again, the board seems to be the same way :-)
