daycare vent

DD goes to daycare for about 9 hours a day. We really like her morning caregiver, and DDs end of day "reports" are always great. Her morning caregiver says she doesn't ever cry, seems happy, naps well. Great! DH usually does the pick-up and drop off. He says she's happy when he drops her off and picks her up. Awesome!

Well, on Monday, I had to pick DD up because DH had to work late. I get to the room and can hear DD screaming before I even enter the room. DD is in an exersaucer, slumped down and screaming. The afternoon caregiver is talking to another mom, making no move to get DD. I go over, pick DD up and she stops crying. I grab her stuff and try to get everything together, but I'm pretty flustered. The whole scene was just upsetting. I totally understand that in a daycare setting, a caregiver can't get to every baby right away, but 1) an exersaucer?? for a small 3 month old who can't support herself with her legs at all?? and 2) she wasn't tending to another child, just talking to a mom.

I know I should have said something right away, but I just wanted to get out of there. DH talked to them the next day and things seem to be resolved. Ok, vent over : (

Re: daycare vent

  • Awww, sorry that happened.  I would be upset too.  I'm glad your DH talked to them about it.  DD starts daycare in two weeks and I'm not looking forward to it.

  • sorry you had to go through that. that scene would have gotten me upset as well. DS will be starting daycare next month and i am dreading leaving him. it just feels weird to be away from for so many hours when i've been with him 24/7 since he was born!
  • What did they say when DH talked to them about it?  How awful!!!!
  • Oh wow!!! You handled it better than I would have. I would be very upset and probably would have interrupted their conversation to point out the scene. So sorry you had to go through that...That is awful!
  • Honestly, I wish I would have said something right then. I just sort of rushed out instead. DH talked to them the next day. Basically, the afternoon caregiver is new and isn't usually there by herself. Not that this is a valid excuse, but the other caregivers explained to her that they don't put infants into an exersaucer until they can touch the floor with their feet and push themselves up using their legs. And that unless she is tending to another child, she should always stop what she's doing to check on a crying child. I think these are common sense things, but apparently they needed to be spelled out for this lady. I wish the morning caregivers were there all day, because they are awesome.

  • My initial thought was you're making a big deal over something really tiny. With that said, if I saw that happen to my daughter, I would probably be quite upset myself. Still, nobody can really care for our own like we can. I imagine you're little one will be ok.

I can understand that, and I certainly don't think DD has been permanently harmed or anything. As I said, I know that DD will cry at daycare. Still, knowing she will cry and actually seeing her slumped over and screaming are very different, KWIM?

Sure, I see where you're coming from. I actually just bought my LO a jumperoo, but haven't taken it out of the box yet, as she's too small for it yet. I get it.

  • Honestly I'd look into another daycare...I worked part time at an AP daycare and this doesn't sit well w. me.  I mean would she leave your LO to CIO @ nap time? If a professional care giver doesn't know to stop talking to a parent to tend to a crying baby then she should not be working there.  That is common sense...

Unfortunately, we live in a very small town and this is our only option for right now : ( There is another DC opening up in the next few months in the next town over that we are considering. I do think that the morning ladies are awesome with the infants, very attentive. They are with DD until 2pm, then she gets picked up at 4pm. I also believe them when they tell me that DD doesn't really cry. They don't let her CIO in her crib. Maybe this is naive on my part, but I think all has been resolved and that it is just the new afternoon caregiver who messed up.
