Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

13 month old has no interest in walking

My 13 month old has never crawled, shes a scoocher. she schooches around on her butt . If you hold her up and walk with her she does it sometimes, but most the time she just sits back down and scooches. How can i get her more interested in walking? she cant scooch on her butt her whole life! I feel bad because she cant really play outside(like in the driveway)  or at certain places because she will hurt her legs and butt. i try and entice her with toys and snacks, and she just sits down and schooches over to them!

  • I'm sure you have heard it before, but really, every baby is different.  One of my good friends has three little girls - the younger two didn't walk until they were 18 months, but they are the smartest kids I know.  Hang in there.

  • DD did crawl at 11 months but didn't walk until 17 months.  We had EI out at around 15 months and they said that although she was cruising holding onto furniture, they told us she needed to build her core (abdominal muscles) to be able to stand and walk on her own.  So they had us sit her on a stool, let her climb on pillows on the floor and things like that to try to build her middle muscles.  Once we started that, she made tremendous progress.  I never considered that it was a muscle issue but it turned out that it was all we needed to do.
  • I was a butt scoocher when I was a baby, and never crawled. I started walking at 15-16 months.

Not much you can do but encourage her! Will she walk around behind a walking toy? Try to get one that's really fun so she wants to use it. My DS had the dino walker that converted to a ride on and he loved that thing.

  • DS wasn't mobile until 11.5 months, didn't do a traditional crawl until 15 months, and didn't walk until 18.5 months. Give her time, she'll do it when she's ready.

  • DD only got into walking at around 14 months, before if you tried to get her to walk while you held her hands she'd fold her legs up under her and hang there. Now she's taken a few unassisted steps and loves walking while holding my hand...she's just not great at it yet :)

  • one of my guys took steps for 2 months before walking right around 13 months. his brother had no interest until the day his twin started completely walking, so a week later he was also on 2 legs. i think if he didn't have a twin brother to chase after, he would have taken even longer before walking. i bet your DD will be walking soon enough!

  • My DD is 14.5 months, and has not a drop of interest in standing or walking. She just started crawling about a month or so ago. I didn't walk until 19 months, so I am not super concerned.
