"Dangle feeding"

So, this is supposed to be the "fool proof" way to get rid of a clogged duct. I kind of did it yesterday, halfway bent over him on the couch, but only for five minutes, and apparently 20-30 (again, why I cannot imagine breastfeeding...) minutes is the trick.

I'm in so much pain that I'm going to suck it up and try again for that 20 minutes. Has anyone fed in this position? I have really large breasts (38DDD before pregnancy, God only knows now...) and yesterday, I just felt like I was suffocating him. I couldn't really just let them hang down because it's way too much weight on his face/mouth/nose and he can't breathe. I'll XP on Bfeeding, but that board is usually too slow!

Anyways, let me know if you've tried it and have any tricks up your sleeve.

Oh, and if I use a nipple shield, does it change the effectiveness of this clot-busting technique?

Re: "Dangle feeding"

  • When I had a clogged duct that was really bad (It was in my arm pit and I couldnt lft my arm)  I BF on that side first the entire day, took a shower and massaged that boob, then didnt wear a bra (I wore a nursing tank instead), then that night I slept on the other of the boob in pain.  Also, ADVIL....lots of advil and it was gone by the next morning.....and I havent had one since

I also make sure to massage my boobs in the shower every day, just to ensure no more.  Also each time before I feed LO I give a quick massage to get things going

I tried the daggle feeding but she didnt enjoy it and it was making it much harder to feed her, which is already difficult enough.

    Hope this helps!!!

  • I EP, so I'm not sure if it's any different but I use this technique when pumping to get rid of clogs. I do it for about 10 minutes, take a super hot shower and massage, then do it for another 10 minutes when I get out (that's my morning routine when I have a clog... which is often) and then I pump using this technique for the last 5-7 minutes of each pump throughout the day. I had a horrific clog yesterday (couldn't even hold LO against my body) and I feel 100% better today.

  • LO prefets a sort of dangle feeding style. It takes lots of pillows for us to get it to work. It's a modified football hold slash dangle with him slightly upright. It helps with my forceful letdown. If I cross cradle him it is so much worse. But my boobs were 36 c before so maybe it's easier with smaller boobs.

Then and now. How did my boy get so big?

I EP too. He'll only latch with a shield and even then, he screams and goes nuts. So, you pump regularly sitting up for 10, hot shower, pump regularly sitting up for 10? and then get on all fours for the last 5 of each pump? I tried pumping on all fours and the milk backed up into the tube, so I stopped thinking it would damage the pump. It won't?

  • I use a nipple shield, but I am not sure how it effects that type of feeding.  Sometimes I can hear that his nose is smashed when BFing so I just take my finger and poke my boob near his nose so that at least one nostrils is free.

No, I dangle pump for 10, shower, then dangle pump for another 10. For the rest of the day I regular pump, then switch to dangle for the last 5-7 minutes. I stand up and lean over the bed. What kind of pump are you using? I have an Ameda Elite (hosp grade) and a Medela Freestyle and I don't have issues with either.

  • I was thinking about you this morning. Have you tried changing the angle of baby's mouth?

My LC told me that where the sides of ds's mouth are, he doesn't empty those areas effectively. You could try making sure that the top or bottom lip is where the clogged duct is. I don't know of this will work, but it's worth a shot.

    You're in my thoughts.

  • I think I had the beginning of a clogged duct the other day and I was looking online for advice.  This one lady said that she always inspects her nipple well and there is a usually a calcification on her nipple.  She removes it and her milk comes spraying out.  Maybe look for that??

What I did the other day was massage that area.  Then took a hot shower and massaged in there too.   When I came out I start hand expressing some milk while dangling over the sink.  And I massaged some more.  When LO woke up I fed him from that boob and next day it was gone.

Have you been to the dr yet?  Hopefully it hasn't turned into mastitis...  Have you had a fever or felt light headed?  Does the area feel hot?  It can make you feel like you have the flu.

  • I've heard to nurse with their chin pointing towards the clog. Good luck
  • I just got rid of a clogged duct. I was taking the motrin I was prescribed after I had LO for the pain/slight fever I had from it. To get rid of it I was constantly taking really hot showers or baths and massaging it--I'd start from the clogged area and massage toward my nipple. And then I would pump extra long on that side. The pain is gone, but I'm still not getting as much milk from that breast as I usually do.
