***Chottomotto***

Forgive me if my memory does not serve me well but weren't you going to do a highly-specialized nursery sans crib? I remember someone was planning to do so and received some flak for it. If it was you, I was just wondering how it turned out?

  • lol yes, I have a Montessori nursery. It turned out like this:

    Napping in the Nursery

You can click the photo to link to my Flickr nursery set to see all of it, but basically we co-slept with a Snugglenest for the first month and we used a mini-crib for the 2nd and 3rd month. Then we transitioned to the full sized Japanese futon without any issues.

We've had to make a few changes, but I really think it's working out well. She usually STTN 10-12 hours and takes 3-5.5 hours of naps. Not all of that is sleep, since she has access to her toys and books, she plays until she's tired and goes to bed. In the morning, I usually wake up to the sound of her rattles or music toys. This gives me a few minutes to make coffee, brush my teeth, and get breakfast out before going to get her. I really, really love her nursery.

  • That is very interesting! I've never heard of that. The nursery is beautiful, why would you get flack for it? I wish I thought of that.
  • I think your nursery setup is AWESOME!  When DD was teething and having wakeful period, I actually suggested to DH that we throw a futon mattress on the floor in her room.  It seemed safer than me falling asleep in the rocker with her in my arms while I was in a haze of exhaustion.  But she got through the phase before we changed her nursery setup, so she is still in her crib.  I had no idea that there was an entire school of thought behind designing a nursery in this fashion, I will totally consider doing this the next time around.  It seems like it would make a lot of things (I'm thinking particularly breastfeeding) much easier!

  • Thanks guys! Like I said, it's working out well for us. And I only created the original post to see how others were planning to decorate & stock their nurseries if they weren't using a crib. You know, since it needs to be completely babyproofed. But it turns out I was the only freak planning to forgo any kind of crib/bassinet/packnplay, so I had to learn from experience.

For example, I've had to make a lot of changes because as a crawler, Lilu could slam her fingers in drawers and play Tarzan with floor-length curtains. She can also tip over the cd diaper pail (gross). So we moved the dressers and diaper pail to another room and tied up the curtains. Then we put in a big cubby shelf with all her toys and books, and a recliner for story time. It's way more useful and safe now. Live and learn!
