Other mums with LOs in daycare and naps

I had a nice few months where naps were pretty easy and most days at home they still are.  N takes two naps.  9:30ish and 2ish for an hour or slightly more each.  I still nurse before naps but we read a story and she goes down mostly awake though I am wanting to start weaning those soon.

At daycare she used to sleep better taking 2 hour afternoon naps.  Lately just 1 hour each but still 2.  Last week or so her afternoon nap goes to pot or is short.  I know it is because it is busy there and she's the youngest -- big kids nap 1-3ish so it should work for her to nap 2-3 but for some reason she isn't.  DCP thinks maybe one nap but I disagree so clearly I win for now.

Are your kiddos on same schedules at home/daycare -- did daycare push one nap sooner than you otherwise would have?

  • I'm trying to go with the flow and have asked them to put her down in am and again in pm and if she doesn't nap fine.  Even if pm nap is a bit late or short that is OK.  She did make switch to 2 naps sooner at daycare than she did at home so it wouldn't surprise me if she switched to one there too.

  • I can usually get her to take two 1 hour naps at home. Daycare is different. They are lucky to get her to nap for 1 hour in the late morning, and then she usually refuses a nap in the afternoon. I'm just going to follow her lead for now. She sleeps well at night, and she doesn't seem over tired.

  • Cody is on a different schedule at home than he is at DC.  But that's because there are different things going on.  He is also changing himself to 1 2-3 hour nap a day instead of 2.  My DCP does not push for a change in naps until they are around 2.  And then she does it gradually - keeping him up a few extra minutes for his nap to slowly push the time out.  She follows his cues on when he is tired and does or does not need a nap.

My DC is an in-home.  Not sure if a center would be different.

  • She sort of naturally switched over to one nap a day about a month or two ago, but daycare does start pushing one nap a day around now (to switch to the young toddler room, which they usually do around 12-15 months, they have to be on one nap per day and sleeping on a cot). However, we went to the pediatrician yesterday and she said that they should really be getting two naps a day until 18 months! I was totally surprised by that, since I always thought that our DC's schedule was in line with what was best for them developmentally (although the pedi did say that it's OK that she's taking one nap as long as it's a nice long one, which it usually is).
