I gave it to him at around 3.5 months... but only i think twice... and not that much (maybe 2-3 spoons) then followed with his regular formula... but it really backed him up and he didn't poop for about 2 days... so I decided to stop... since being at 4 months now, we are going to slowly start introducing puree'd foods (starting with avocado) once a day in junction with his bottle.

well i was thinking id give a little to him before bed so maybe he'd possibly sleep better...? ive heard that works.
That's an owt, I'm skipping rice since it has very little nutrienal value, oatmeal is better. But I'm waiting until closer to six months they grow up so fast no reason to rush it.

I'm a lurker but found this question interesting. With DS1, I started with single grain cereals at about 3.5 months. He was breastfed and never satisfied. With DD, I am going to wait until I get the same "signs" from her.
But feeding them solids actually does make SOME kids sleep longer. DS would wake up a few times a night hungry and ready to eat. He slept much longer once he started solids because he was full and satisfied for much longer. Formula (and especially breastmilk) is digested much quicker than solids.
We started with cereal around 4 months but she had no interest in it. We tried carrots a few weeks after that and she loves them. We are taking it really slow though and keeping her formula intake the same.
Generally the minimum recommended age is 4 months. I would check with your pediatrician. The newer recommendation is to wait until 6 months.
And no, it won't help them sleep better at night.
ETA: My completely BF baby (except for a little formula her first week) sleeps for a 7-8 hour stretch most nights and has gone 10.
This for DD#2.. DD#1 was also EBF, but didn't sleep as good until she was about 6 months old. We tried cereal with DD#1 at 5 months, but we'll probably wait until 6 months with DD#2.
With DD1 I waited until she really showed signs of being ready, which was right around 6 months. DD2 is already getting a bit curious, so might be a little earlier with her.
Also I skipped the cereals altogether. We went straight to foods we eat (obviously pureed or mashed) and she was and is an amazing eater. So I will likely do the same with DD2.
I just wanted to add that we added the cereal to their bottles so young after trying other things and talking with the pediatrician. They were eating formula every 2ish hours and if they ate over 6oz they would spit up horribly. We backed the formula down to 5oz with 1 Tbsp of cereal and they stay satisfied for 3-4 hours, don't spit up and are just happier overall. It also helped to regulate my daughter's poops, which was something we had struggled with since birth.
We got the side-eye from a lot of people for starting cereal so early, but for our babies it was the best thing. We didn't want them to sleep longer for our own convenience, we just wanted them to be satisfied and not screaming after every meal. Anyway, I just said all that to say that every little one is different and you, as their mommy, know what's best.
