Apple Cider: Will You or Won't You?

Yesterday's Tuesday Ticker GTKY asked what we loved about fall. That made me think...what is your bravery level regarding apple cider? I LOVE it, hot and cold, but if I buy it at our local cider mills it's not pasteurized. One of my favorite parts about the season! Argh.

My doctor said she is "supposed to" advise against it, even hot (?!), but that she drank it throughout her own pregnancy with no problems. Still don't know how I feel about it. Any thoughts?

Re: Apple Cider: Will You or Won't You?

  • I don't drink it because it messes with my gut, but if I didn't have that problem I would totally indulge.  But don't listen to me, I drink raw milk when I'm pregnant and think it's really good for you Wink

  • I would drink it hot!  I wish I had a local mill that made it but the only way I can get it where I live (that I know about) is through the supermarket and it's pasteurized.

  • Yum! There is a orchard nearby that has the best apple cider and I look forward to it every year... I'm going for it!  Keurig also makes some apple cider pods for the coffee maker and they are ok, just not the same.

  • I will be drinking it! But our local cider mill pasteurizes their cider, so I don't consider it especially risky. And I will eat LOTS of donuts.

  • I am! Actually I just brought up to the SO that I would like to take a trip to a orchard soon as the temps have dropped here and would love to have a hot cup!
  • If it wasn't sweltering hot and humid here...that would sound SOO good to me! When I was still working, I'm convinced 75% of my holiday weight gain was from getting Caramel Apple Ciders, Creme Brulattes, or Egg Nog Lattes at Starbucks. I hardly ever go there during the year...but I LOOVE those fall/winter brews!!!

"Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?...But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:26-27&33-34

  • I would, but I also eat raw cookie dough and lunch meat.

Apples don't grow in FL, so I can only get the bottled apple cider or packets of Wassail. Fresh cider sounds delicious.

  • I love cider time! The place.i.usually get my cider from uv treats it, which is.somehow.different that pasturization, but i.would drink.it.regardless. dH made a press.a.few years back and.we usually make some (usually we will make most of it into hard.cider)but this year i have been rendered useless, so no personal.cider here.
  • Mmm apple cider :) I'd go for it. Isn't it like eating an apple raw...? Seems safe to me :)

  • Yuuum, cider.  It gives me terrible heartburn though.  I live in the middle of Oklahoma and we don't have mills and cider presses all around though, so I just get it at Walmart. :)  I'm 100% sure mine is pasturized.  We tend to pour a gallon of it in a crock pot and start adding our own spices.

  • My favorite cider mill's cider is unpasteurized. However, there is another one close by that has pasteurized cider. I have been going there instead... just this year though :)

  • Drinking it as we speak. I did during my last pregnancy too from a local orchard.
Proud Momma to two beautiful children!!!

  • I will drink it if it's pasteurized! I'm definitely a rule follower while I'm pregnant but I have a good reason to be. :(

  • I don't see why not!

During my last pregnancy I asked my doctor about apple cider and egg nog and they said it was safe as long as it says pasteurized on the product!

I live in Maine and I love the local apple orchards cider and it's pasteurized!

And I could not go without Hoods Golden egg nog during the holidays!!

  • When I was pregnant with DD, the apple cider at the big local orchard had I believe salmonella.  So while I am usually not overly cautious, no thanks.
