Names too Odd?

SO and I recently settled on names for LO and the reactions have been mixed but overall our families thought our boy names were too odd. Any input?

Boy, Keller Michael , after my dad and the doctor that saved my life
Girl, Mara Lynne, which has no significance we just really like it.

Re: Names too Odd?

  • I don't think they are too odd.  They are unique, but not completely out there.  I think Mara is pretty.  Is it pronounced Mare-a or Mar-a?  That's the only issue I see with the name - people not knowing how to pronounce it.

Keller is NMS, but I don't think it's a bad name.

  • Mara Lynne is really great!  When I hear Keller it makes me think of Helen Keller, but that's just me.  It's a name I've never heard of but maybe it's more common than I'm aware of.  But with any name that is different once it's used often enough then it becomes normal.

  • I like them! Keller is the name of my girl cousin, so I thought girl, but I know it is more commonly a male name.

  • I think they're great! Odd is a strange word. Maybe slightly unique or not all that common? But I think that's a good thing. I like them :)

  • Neither of your name choices are odd. If you like them the grandparents will just have to get used to it.

  • Don't seem that odd.  I've never really heard of Keller, but it's not "out there".  I like the girl's name - it's pretty.  I teach though, so trust me, there are some ODD names out there.  I've had an Echo, Beaver, Blue, Torrent, SirPatrick, Nevaeh, River, Alize, Precious, Mercedes,MyUnique....the list goes on.  Keller and Mara at least sound like actual names instead of random objects you might have seen on the way to the hospital or names of liquors and cars!  If you are in love with the names, just don't mention them anymore and name your kid what you want!  We flat out choose not to share names for this reason.  Everyone has an opinion.

  • I like both those names! The meaning behind the boy's name is really sweet.

  • I think they are cute...my advice is do not share any names until the arrival of the baby, I don't like opinions and your better off waiting to announce the name when the baby is born and they are too busy awwing and ahhhing about the baby to care about the name..just my opinion!

If you are referring to Mercedes as a car name it is actually a very common Spanish religious name meaning merciful coming from the Virgin de la merced. It's a real name with a long history that is still commonly used in many Spanish speaking countries.

OP I like your names. Not too out there IMO.

I agree with this, but I don't think that either of them are too odd.  I like uncommon names as well.  I would not let the grandparents' opinions sway your decision.

  • Great names.  If you are feeling nervous about the boy name, you could always go with Michael Keller which is a bit "safer."  That said, I think Keller is cool.

  • I'm with PP- unique but not odd.  Different but not "oh my gosh, what were those parents thinking" different.  I like unique names that still have a classic touch- and I think those fit in that category.  :)
