I gained about 75 lbs in my first pregnancy. I gain easily, and I lose easily, but I cannot yo-yo during pregnancy. Has anyone had the experience of gaining a lot during one pregnancy, and successfully gaining less with subsequent pgs? I am starting off in the overweight range (BMI 28), which is acceptable for surrogacy, but I had hoped to be a 26 by the time we had our transfer, but failed. At any rate, there seems to be a good amount of medical advice out there that says women who are overweight do not need to gain the full recommended amount. I am going to talk to the RE and OB about this.
Anyone who has any advice and/or experience with this, please share and TIA.
Re: Any tips? (question from 1st tri)
It was definitely diet. I am married to an enabler! I was bad at maintaining my weight pre-pg. I never really managed to get a handle on it. I think I was fighting my set-point (around 145-150) trying to be skinny (around 130), get there, then would completely give up and get up to 160's. I have had one friend suggest eating a diet similar to what is recommended for GD, but I don't know if that is OK through an entire pregnancy.
I can definitely limit any fast food, and takeout, but our eating habits at home are still not that great.
During my 1st pg I only walked as exercise. I am still under the "only light activities" recommendation post-transfer, but I would like to do more than just walk this time around. I don't think there was a significant amount of water weight. I lost 30 lbs shortly after having DD who was nine pounds.
It is totally ok for you to eat the GD way through a pregnancy. I know of women who found out at 12 weeks they had GD again, and they're fine.
If you're really worried, I would suggest going ahead and starting it. I'm going to eat from it now that my DR has gotten on to me for gaining too much! Good luck!
PS. Swimming is also a great workout. Even just lightly treading water gives a good tone up!
If you are only 140-150, then I imagine the dr will still want you to gain, just not 75 lbs... Eating the GD diet would be a great, healthy way to eat for pregnancy. Typical guidelines are:
Breakfast: 15-30g carbs, plus at least one serving of protein
Snack: 15g carbs, plus one protein
Lunch: 30-60g carbs, plus usually 2 or more servings of protein
Snack: 15g carbs, plus one protein
Dinner:30-60g carbs, plus usually 2 or more servings of protein
Snack: 15g carbs, plus one protein
No fruit, milk or yogurt with breakfast (usually), and avoid refined sugars as completely as possible. Also, anytime you're eating carbs, you should try to make them whole grains and fruits (whole wheat bread, not white, brown rice, not white, etc)... It's a very healthy way to eat for anyone and most doctors would support it fully even in pregnancy. For many women it is "more" than they are used to eating. It is actually really hard to snack three times a day, especially when you have to think about it so thoroughly.
As far as gaining weight, I am actually overweight and was with my first pg. I "gained" maybe 10lbs in my last month of pregnancy last time, but it was evidently water weight. I had lost 30 lbs from my prepregnancy weight a month after delivering. This time, I am just now back at prepregnancy weight. So I'll probably "gain" a few pounds as little man gets bigger, but I would be shocked if I crossed that 10lb marker again. So no, gaining weight is not necessarily a requirement. I am a full 100lbs heavier than you though, so my body is clearly different.
