If your LO has a cow's milk protein allergy, what type of milk are you moving him/her to? K and I are still breastfeeding mornings/nights but I stopped pumping and will soon be out of a freezer stash for daycare. At her one year, our pedi recommended moving her to formula Nutramigen since she couldn't have whole milk. I told the pedi that I'd prefer to move her to hemp milk and feed her soy and coconut milk yogurt for added protein and fat. The pedi didn't really like that idea. I'd prefer not to give her formula. What are other mom's doing?
At her one year she was 20 lbs 8 oz 50th and 30 in 75th.
Re: Milk protein allergy
Pedis are there to make recommendations. It's your job to do your research and make a decision for your family.
Hemp milk has DHA, the one we buy has 6g fat and 110 calories per 6 oz. I am happy with those numbers and the nutrition content. We buy sweetened, vanilla hemp milk with the intent of cutting it with unsweetened and weaning him off the sweet stuff. We did it this way because he's a BF'd baby and they like it sweet. So far, we're at 50/50. He gets a sippy cup of it at dinner time (although until recently he was not able to figure out how sippies work). He just recently started to grasp the concept and he likes it just fine.
Our pediatrician wouldn't endorse anything other than WCM. But, that's what docs are trained to do -- endorse AAP and WHO recommendations. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing, just doesn't lend itself well to those of us who need alternative means of nutrition.
This response about pedis makes me sad. Not because I disagree, but because I can see it being the case. Makes me extra thankful for my pedi, as he encourages me to do whatever the heck I want. One time I suggested something he found ridiculous (I don't recall what it was but if he was a teenager I'm sure he would've rolled his eyes) but regardless he said, "You're the mom so you're the final expert. Do what you feel is best." That's what I love about him and I can't lie-it makes me trust him more.
