Trouble TTC

Intro and Question

I have been putting off introing here, since I apparently like to live in denial, but I have a question that I hope you ladies can help me with.

A little background:

DH and I have been married for 2 years and TTC just over a year.  I had an appointment with my OB/GYN last week and we made a plan for starting IF testing.  So far I've had CD 3 bloodwork and DH had a SA, but we haven't gotten either results back yet.  I was supposed to schedule my HSG for this month and I just found out that we have absolutely no IF insurance coverage at all and will be completely OOP.  I suspected as much, but when I talked to the insurance company to find out if the HSG was covered, they couldn't tell me anything without the billing code.

So here are my questions (also posted on TTGP):

1. Did you do your HSG with your Gyno or a RE?

2. If you don't mind sharing, about how much did you HSG cost?

I am trying to decide if I should start looking for a RE and finish my testing with him/her, or finish my testing with my gyno.  He also told me he can do basic treatments (which I know includes IUI, because he talked about IUI a little), but I am afraid that he won't do proper monitoring with any medicated cycle.  What I am trying to avoid is having to redo any testing if I have to move on to a RE, since we are completely OOP.  To complicate the issue to have my HSG done this cycle, I have to call the doctor's office back by tomorrow afternoon.

Sorry this got kind of long :)  TIA

PAIF/SAIF Welcome!

Re: Intro and Question

  • Hi and welcome.  Sorry you have to be here.

My HSG was ordered by my RE but done in a hospital because radiology does it.  Well, a dr does it in the radiology room.

I cant help with the cost since mine was covered by insurance.

I would make an appt with an RE.  Treatments really need to be monitored closely and by a specialist IMO.

    Best of luck to you.

Hi and welcome. I would certainly check with your insurance company once you have the billing code. If your DH's SA was covered and so was the b/w, I would think you have coverage for testing, but not treatment. That is how my insurance works at least. I believe in total, had insurance not covered my HSG, it was around $1500.

Thanks.  He actually just did his SA today and I did my bloodwork today, so I am not sure if either will be covered (I am guessing probably not).  The doctor's called the insurance with the billing codes for precertification, so I am pretty sure the HSG will not be covered.

  • Welcome and sorry that you have to be here!

I had my HSG done at the hospital and it was prescribed by my OBGYN.  I called my insurance carrier before the procedure and I was told they would cover 80% of it as it is diagnosing infertility (I have BlueCross/BlueShield).  After the procedure, I received a bill from the hospital for $897 and one from the performing doctor for $219.  That was the full amount and I was billed incorrectly.  They are fixing it and and I'm getting re-billed but I HTH!

  • 1)  I did my HSG with my OB/GYN.  I was unsure of whether or not I should do it with a RE or my OB, but the RE I want to go to is an hour and half away.  So, I felt like that would atleast cut out one trip and therefore one less day I have to take off.  My OB/GYN also gave me a CD with the hsg on it so I can take it with me to a RE.

    2) I was told it will cost about $750 after insurance.  My insurance covers 80/20 for testing only but I had to meet the $500 deductible first.

Me 27 DH 29 Married since 2007, together since 2001
Off BC since Febuary 2006 3 Clomid Cycles in 2008- symptomatic, US just showed a tilted uterus, otherwise normal, HSG normal.  DH has an ejaculatory duct obstruction and a congenital absence of the vas deferens.  This is common with cystic fibrosis carriers, but he doesn't have cystic fibrosis. IVF #1 with TESE/ICSI (Antagonist protocol) Aug 2014=BFN (poor embryo quality)   IVF #2 ICSI long lupron protocol November 2014

  • Welcome. I had my HSG done by my OB/GYN. They sent copies to the RE when I went to him, so I didn't have to do it again.  My insurance, which is a really crappy self funded plan, covers testing done through the OB/GYN office. I know co-workers have had u/s, b/w, etc. done at the OB/GYN and taken results to RE just so insurance will pay it. It all depends on the diagnosis code. See if there is any flexibility in the code they use;  maybe they can find one that would be covered. Good luck.
    Me 38 DH 40
    TTC since Dec 2010.
Diagnosed anovulatory, HSG clear. Slight MFI- borderline count, but excellent motility and morphology
    Nov. 12- Feb.13 Gonal F + Ovidrel + IUI = BFN
Lap April 13. Found blocked tube and bridged fimbria. Opened tube and cut fimbria. All clear
June 13  Gonal F+ Pregnyl +IUI = BFN Stopped treatment with RE due to side effects from drugs and told we needed IVF.
Oct. 13 started Accupuncture and Chinese herbs- being monitored by RE. Getting better response- e2 and follie size.
Now RE says TI till March, then IUI. Fingers crossed,

    All welcome
  • ::Waves hi my friend! Sorry you have to be here, but these ladies rock, so welcome!!!!

Did you do your HSG with your Gyno or a RE? I had my OB do it, because she did the basic testing. Plus I felt really comfortable with her. I did not want to run to RE, and even know we have ins that covers I felt like that is sometimes what drives costs up. Because with specialists comes specialists prices. We sought a RE when we were dx with MFI.

    2. If you don't mind sharing, about how much did you HSG cost?I believe my EOB said it was like $500

  • 1. Did the HSG with our RE.  If you think you'll go to an RE, personally, I'd just get the testing done there.  Some clinics are picky about who does the test, and they may make you repeat things if you did them elsewhere.

    2. The HSG was ~$500

Sorry you're OOP, we're in the same boat.  Good luck!
