The story.
So, I learned English by memorizing "The Sound of Music" when I was five. Not just songs (duh! ), but every single line. Yes, I still know it by heart. If you challenge me, I promise you'll be really bored about 5 minutes into it (it happens constantly).
One day, on my way to work, I read in the local public transportation paper that Julie Andrews was going to be in town directing the play "The Boyfriend". Cue total freak-out. I was crying on the T. I got to work, shaking, and one of my colleagues asked what the matter was. I said, "Julie Andrews is going to be in BOSTON!" Another colleague chimed in, "I work as an usher at the Shubert. You want to go?" Cue even bigger freak-out. I didn't even expect her to follow through on it, honestly, but when the date approached, she gave me a ticket. That night, I got to the theater early and met her, and about 15 minutes before the performance was due to start, she came to my (FANTASTIC) seat and said, "I need to take you to a different seat in the back." I was like, why would I go sit in the back, dude? She said to just listen to her, so I followed her to a seat in the very back row. Yeah, thanks, Christine...
There were two empty seats right in front of me. About five minutes into the performance, in walks Julie Andrews and sits DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF ME. I'll give you a second to take that in.

I had two choices: I could watch the play, or I could stare at the back of her head for the entire time. I chose the latter. Remember that episode of Will and Grace when Jack tries to cut Patty Lupone's hair? If I'd had scissors, that would have been me.
She left before the end of the play so no one would realize she had been there.
Then, because it was opening night, there was a cast party. Christine could take a guest to said party and had planned on taking her boyfriend, but at the last minute, she called him and said she was taking me instead. (He wasn't happy. Christine, I LOVE YOU more than he ever did. )
We got to the party, and Julie was there talking to people. I walked up to her and the first thing that came out of my mouth was, "Will you marry me?"
Yes, I'm serious.
She did not say no (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!), and I told her I had learned English by memorizing TSoM. She said, "Well, I've never heart THAT before..." I asked whether I could have a photo taken with her, and she said she was on her way to do the Director's Speech, but we would "find each other."
"We will find each other," she said, holding on to my hands with both of hers. WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!! By the way, she is the personification of class. I'll do an impression when I see you in person because there isn't even a way to explain the way she walks around. It's uber regal.
I didn't really think we would find each other with HUNDREDS of friggin' people at the cast party, but when she saw me out of the corner of her eye, as she was leaving, she told her husband (the late Blake Edwards), "Oh! I promised that girl a picture." He mumbled that they had to go, and she said to him, again: "I promised her a picture."
Again: WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!
She came over, and I'll post the result below because The Bump won't let me link a photo from a new post. Whatevs, The Bump. You're just jealous.
One of the funniest things about that evening was that I got home and I HAD TO HAD TO HAD TO tell someone. I ended up calling my brother. It was around 3 a.m. in Brazil, and here's how the conversation went:
B, sleepily: "Hello?"
Me: "B, GUESS WHO I JUST MET?
B: "Julie Andrews? Because if it's anyone other than Julie Andrews, I'll fly over there and kill you. Call me in the morning."
Seriously.
Again: WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

I always hated Julie Andrews but this is making me rethink my position.
I'm kidding, she is a treasure. This makes me love her even more. Thanks for sharing!

good thing you redeemed yourself.
Wow. That is a great story. A lesbian who knows more of the SoM than I do? Wow.
Right? I was like, "Oh, NO! I'm going to have to write off Leap!"
To be fair, I know more of TSoM than most gay men, too. Ha! A few months ago, I was in the kitchen and K was channel surfing in the living room. All of a sudden, I hear the sound of the door banging when the Captain finds Maria walking around the house when she first gets there and is waiting for him. There's nothing else but that sound for a while, and I ran from the kitchen yelling, "TSoM is on! Why didn't you tell me?" And K said, something along the lines of, "I wondered how long it would take for you to figure it out. I didn't think a bang and no words would do it, though." Hahahahah! I'm a maniac...
