Getting out ?

(CP from SAHMs - I thought you guys would have experience with this too!)

Hi you guys,

I have an issue. Before having DD, I was really active with our dog, but since having the baby, DH has taken responsibility for dog walks.  I need to get back at it, since I'd like the exercise and DD would enjoy getting out... But here is the problem:

DD isn't happy anywhere other than my arms for very long. We have a BOB stroller and an Ergo, and she starts squirming in both after about 10 minutes (including both front and back carry with the Ergo). She likes being in my sling, but there's no way I could carry her in that for an hour.

So, any suggestions? She is really interested in her surroundings, and needs to see everything. The Ergo doesn't give her a lot of visibility, and the BOB gives her more, but she doesn't like not being able to see me. I've thought about a more structured carrier, where she's higher... would that work? Any other tips? I'd love to get out and active with her!

Thanks :)

  • If she likes to see, a high back carry might work better for you.  The problem some have with buckles like the Ergo is that it is meant to be worn on the hips so baby sits lower on your back.  A mei tai or a woven wrap could get her nice and high so she could see over your shoulder - which it sounds like she might like more.

If by "structured" you mean a hiking pack - I wouldn't go there ;)  They are far less comfy and more bulky and really are only needed if you need to haul gear as well.

Eleanor was younger than your LO here but to give you an idea of how the mei tai would look different in a back carry than the Ergo:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dFvYNtWbFQ&feature=plcp

  • How old is she? Old enough to be fed snack bribes to.get into the stroller? Or will she do one, and then the other (wear her for the first part, and then put her in the stroller when she gets sick of it)? I would go for short walks and see what she starts to like, I'd guess she'll get used to walks after a bit.

ETA: Damn autocorrect and the Bump's awesomely bad programming of their mobile site! Fixed it so it's readable :)

Great video, NCBelle!  And can I just say...you are so pretty!  And you have gorgeous children :)

  • what about a stroller that can face you or face away? I dont have any specific suggestions, but Im sure there are some. (we have one, but I dunno how great it would be off pavement). That way she gets the sun protection, can see you AND whats going on around her.

  • What about some sort of hip carrier? I've never had one so can't say much, but I've seen them around!

  • I used to time naps around walks, because he would be fine in the stroller if he was sleeping.  Also, have you tried jogging/running with the BOB?  I find that LO does better if we are jogging than when I am walking sometimes.  HTH!
