Babies: 9 - 12 Months

DS needs a circ revision

I hope it's ok to post here to hear success stories.

Our pedi thought the Circ was ok @ our 2 mo appt, but @ 4 mos, she thought there was too much skin. We went to a pediatric urologist on Monday & he agrees that it needs correction. Ds also has extra skin around the urethral opening that will also be removed & he'll need stitches. We'll probably do this in March when he's 11 months old because we've met our outrageous OOP max for the year & It renews April 1. Of course I am really nervous about this b/c ds will be put under general anesthesia.

Have you had any experience with this?!

Thanks!

Re: DS needs a circ revision

  • I think the anesthesia risk goes down with age & increasing weight.... Uro said to do it between 6-24 months. He said the risk (I'm assuming of death!) Is 1 in 300,000 under 6 mos and 1 in 500,000 over 6 months.

I don't know when the best time to do it is though!! I hate that he has to go through this!

  • DS goes in next Thursday for his surgery. None of the doctors mentioned that there was an issue because they didn't think he was circumcised in the first place. One Dr. finally mentioned something at his 6 mo. appt. and I saw a pedi urologist when he was about 8 mo. old. Because it's "cosmetic" we had to go a on a waiting list and now have a surgery date. I'm hoping it goes well! The Dr. did tell me that they won't even do it before 6 mo. because he has to be put under general anesthesia, but before 18 mo they don't remember anything. He'll get tylenol/advil every 4 hrs. for a couple of days and then they said he should be fine. I guess it really depends on the kid.

  • Stupid question - Is there like a medical problem with it? I mean would you have the option to just leave it if you wanted, or would it cause problems in the future? I obviously know it doesn't look circ'd or whatever.

  • I wish we didn't have to do the surgery....I let DH make the decision about having the circ in the first place. But, there are adhesions and extra skin at the urethral opening...the Uro said that he would dribble urine b/c of the extra skin.

  • DS wasn't able to be circ'd when he was born because they saw extra skin and thought he might have a hypospadius(sp?) We got him to a pedi uro around 2 months old and he did not have a hypospadius, what he had was a step below so it wasn't as serious but still required surgery. We had to schedule it for 6 months old since he needed to be put under general anesthesia so that's what we did. Surgery went great and in recovery he was fussy so they gave him some meds, we left about an hour or two after surgery and when we got home he was acting like his normal self! I have tylenol on hand just in case but it didn't seem to bother him one bit, he was crawling around and getting into everything like usual. The only "problem" I had was one of the stitches got stuck to the band aid so I ended up taking him to his pedi to take it off. Overall it was a simple process.
