Over Weight Mom to Be

I'm over weight and concerned about being pregnant.  For health issues first of all.  However I'm so worried that no one will think I'm pregnant, just fat. I fear that I'm not going to start showing till I'm really far along b/c of being over weight.  :(

Re: Over Weight Mom to Be

  • I gained a lot of weight with my 1st pregnancy and have kept it on. I still have a "shape" but it did take me longer to show with my son than with my DD because I was skinny when I got pregnant with her. I didn't gain any weight with my DS and actually lost some after. I really made a point to watch what I ate (im a big eater) and to try and walk frequently and I think it helped me. I hope to do the same with this pregnancy. Good luck with your pregnancy and honestly no matter how you carry you will be beautiful because of the special blessing you are carrying.

  • I started this one about 60 pounds overweight. At this point there is nothing you can do so try your best not to let it bother you. All that matters right now is being healthy and enjoying this pregnancy. Keep an open dialog with your Dr. about your concerns, focus on healthy choices and most of all allow yourself to enjoy being pregnant.

Regardless of what body type you have every woman will get strange, random comments from people on the outside and they mean nothing! I was really worried when people started asking my due date cause I look much farther along than I am but I have learned to get over it.

  • Me too! I'm about 55lbs overweight, and I'm only 8 weeks along right now. The switch to super healthy eating, regular walking/stretching, taking prenatal vitamins and drinking more water have actually had me lose 5 lbs in the last 2 weeks. My doctor said it is normal for those of us heavier mommies to lose a bit at first if you start making consistently healthy choices. If you're concerned about gestational diabetes (I am!) then just make sure that every craving you have, that you try really hard to supplement with something similar (but healthier) so that your baby will get the best benefits. The good news is, that you might not gain as much at all if you're already overweight. When you start wearing maternity clothes, people will notice. It's all about perception! Be a proud mommy, and take care of yourself and your LO, and enjoy knowing that instead of feeling self consious about your weight, you can now proudly say "I'm pregnant" when people ask.

  • Thank you OP and all the responses. I am overweight also by about 60lbs and have these same concerns and fears. It is helpful to know I am not alone and am doing my best to change my thinkin.

Maybe we need a mantra? "I am pregnant, beautiful, making healthy choices and love my baby!"

  • I'm overweight too.  I'm about 5'7'' and 208ish.  I lost about 5 pounds right off the bat, probably because I started eating healthier.  I'm worried about just looking fat too.  The only thing that makes me feel better is that I carry my weight all over, not just in my belly, so I'm pretty proportional and maybe that'll help.  I am afraid I'll gain weight everywhere though, and not just my belly.  I wanna be a cute pregnant lady!  lol

  • You ladies are awesome!  I love that you can be open and honest on here and find people who can relate to what your going through.  What a great support system I have in all of you!
  • I am some of the same fears as you. I've always been over weight and my 1st pregnancy I got huge. I am 5'9" and I was 218 lbs when I got pregnant. At the end of my pregnancy I was 272, I was so sad at how much I had gained. The smallest I was able to get down to was 248 but am currently sitting at 263. I'm scared I'm going to get reeeeaaly big this time as I'm having twins, but I am far more determined to eat healthly, keep moving and get right back on the work out train once these babies arrive. And definitely stick to healthier choices!
We just have to make concious decisions on healthier eating and try very hard to be a little bit active everyday and it will help so much :
