Daycare and 1 nap

Has anyone else had this issue?

At Daycare they transition to 1 nap at 12 months. DS was fighting his 2nd nap and sometimes wouldn't take one at all so it seemed right.  He now takes his nap from 11:30- 1 (sometimes longer)

Well now he falls asleep on the way home at 6pm and when he doesn't fall asleep he is cranky and overtired and he sleeps horribly. Is this something he will just get used to or do i need to push to two naps again? I just feel bad because when he was taking two naps they would struggle to get him a 2nd one.

Thanks!!

Re: Daycare and 1 nap

  • Yep, mine did this too.  Except Kendall got transitioned at 10 months since they needed the space in the Infant 1 room.  They would always give her a morning nap if she needed it, which she did at first.  She adjusted well.  It took a few weeks.  We had the same thing.  She was extremely cranky.  Now she does great.  You could ask for two, but they might not give it.  I think most centers follow a certain routine for ALL the kids in the class.

  • Mine moved over at 11 mo and it was kind of rough for a few weeks. they're fine now and usually nap 11:30 or 12 to 130 or 2.  If we go for a run after work , they'll nap from 515-545 or so, but it hasnt affected anythign.
  • I do whatever I can to keep him awake in the car on the way home so that he'll go down easily after dinner and bath (but we also don't do CIO, so if I let him fall asleep or take an evening nap, I won't get him to easily go down until after 9...not okay when he has to be up by 7 the next day, and won't be able to nap until 12!).  It takes some adjusting, but my boy is transitioning to one nap quite well now, about 3-4 weeks into it.  GL!

  • We are doing this right now, too. It's nice to hear the head's up that it might take a couple weeks. DD has always adjusted quickly to routine changes so I probably wouldn't have expected it to take a long time.

Right now we are on a sometimes-one-nap-sometimes-two-naps kind of schedule. She gets up around 6 to head to daycare so on those days she takes two naps (although she didn't sleep at all for morning nap yesterday) and on stay-home days she sleeps until 7 or 7:30 and we are working on doing only one nap right after lunch.

  • Thanks for the replies! I'll give it a couple weeks and see how it goes!

  • We had the same problem but DD transitioned pretty quickly.  I still give her two naps on the weekends.  Usually though she'll only nap for an hour at a time on the weekends, whereas, during the week she takes a 2 - 2 1/2 hour nap at daycare.

It does get better it just takes a few weeks!

  • DD won't nap much at daycare, so if she wants an extra snooze before dinner, I let her have it. I remember DD1 did the same thing. I just let them grow out of it (if I recall correctly, DD1 did this for a couple of months).
