Adoption

*gnome* Library question for you!

This is a debate DH and I frequently speculate on: what's the future of libraries, given the growing popularity of e-readers?  Do you think libraries will be around in 50 years?  Or will they look really different? How are e-publications going to change reading in our culture in general?

Love to hear your thoughts!

Re: *gnome* Library question for you!

  • Assuming this is for all to answer otherwise you would have sent a PM.  I LOVE the library.  Even though I can find information at they typing of a keyboard, I still love going to the stacks and finding books and also listening to books on tape (CD's).  If I am traveling to a foreign country, I always take out a bunch of travel books to read before hand. I am looking forward to taking LO to the library as well for story hour and taking out loads of books to read at night.  That being said, I do think libraries will evolve.  Many libraries in our area offer loaner e-books.  I think stacks will shrink and "e-books" will expand.  I don't see libraries going away completely because it is still a great place to go for some "quiet" time

Jillian, let's reconnect in 2062 and see what really happens.

  • I worked at a good-sized library for several years, and we definitely stayed busy (even if quite a few of our regular patrons were without homes for the "quiet time" IRR mentioned).  However, I have noticed fewer of the school age through middle age crowd frequenting the library since e-readers became so popular.

I have to admit; I was the one totally against the e-readers who declared that I loved printed books and printed books alone . . . and we don't go to the library very often at all these days.  I even donated a lot of my books and buy new ones for Kindle, just because my book collection got so out of control.  :(

    Adding a Burden
  • Sorry, I've been away from my home computer for a few days, so I just saw this!

I think there will always be a need for libraries and information professionals - the rate of information production (research, publishing, etc.) is astronomical, and we will always need people who are willing and able to organize this information in ways that make it accessible to the public.

Libraries already look totally different than they did 50 years ago, and I don't expect these changes to slow down any time soon.  Publishers and researchers will still be charging for the information they put out, and the vast majority of people don't want to pay for something they can get for "free" at their local public or university library.  There are still tons of problems with the e-book publishing model, and until those get sorted out (and the public begins understanding why e-books cost the same as or even more than paper books), there will be a need for libraries to advocate for their patrons, etc.

I could go on and on, but I think the above makes a pretty good argument for libraries.  If you have more specific questions or want to talk about it more, please comment or send me a PM! :D
