Will be 39 weeks this weekend. Dr told me today that I can Induce on Monday if I would like. I have been 2 cm dilated for a month now. I was induced w my older daughter but that was not by choice just due to a medical need low fluid. And That went perfectly fine.
So of course I feel so ready until the choice is mine now I am questioning going against "nature". I know many of you are thinking are you crazy.. Do it! But I know it is harder on the body if you are technically not ready.... Again I think because I have been given the option i am a little nervous!! Dr said I am young and healthy enough and handled it fine w 1 so he feels very comfortable w it. Any thoughts?
Re: Induce or not to induce???
Actually, I consider it crazy to induce without medical indication, and solely out of convenience, impatience, or whatever it is that leads patients/doctors to artificially send the body and baby into labor.
I've long been convinced of this, but if I needed another reminder, I got it yesterday- my cousin was induced, labored for a day and a half and ultimately had a c-section just because she and her doctor were "ready for the baby to come."
ETA: I don't know anything about your positive bstrep situation, but I'd ask the doctor what the latest time would be before you were in real danger of missing this. I hope you come to a decision you are happy with!
Actually, I think many of us are thinking you are crazy because you would WANT to be induced...You aren't even due yet, you can go into labor at any time. I would not want to induce without a medical reason before 41 weeks.
As for being GBS+, I highly doubt that your labor would be SO fast that you wouldn't make it to the hospital on time for antibiotics, unless you live REALLLY far from the hospital.
I was GBS positive with DS and was only in labor long enough to get the first of two doses of antibiotics. They just kept us in the hospital one extra night to monitor DS, but it was no biggie. I wouldn't let that play into your decision at all.
IMO- Not unless there is a serious health issue.
Otherwise, let that baby bake as long as possible.
I was induced with my first (he was 2 wks past EDD so I didn't have an option) and it was terrible - pitocin was at the highest, my epidural didn't work on one side, I was in labor for 13 hours, 6 hrs active labor and pushing on and off, fever, vacuum and episiotomy 4. I'm glad you did not experience that with your first one. My second was late and they tried to force induction after one week, I told them to please let me wait one more week since my fluids were fine and I felt good. He came on his own 10 days late, total labor was 1 hr, active labor about 15 minutes and pushed for less than 5 minutes. I know that is not the norm, but I was so glad I did not get induced again and have to deal with hours of waiting for the baby to get ready or needing medical intervention. This time I plan to wait as long as I can if the baby is late again - I would never elect to be induced after my first experience. Good luck!
This.
I think getting advice from the rest of us is fine, but I think this should be a discussion between you and your doctor. I have a GREAT doctor who has been awesome and dead on about everything we've been concerned with this pregnancy.
For example, we had two soft markers for Down's at our anatomy scan, but he didn't seem concerned. Moms on here suggested I get a new doctor, get second opinions, on and on. Their hearts were in the right place and I was open to their advice, but it turns out he didn't try to concern us with it because both of these markers appear in a lot of babies and in the 30 years he's practiced medicine, he's only had 1 mother whose baby still had evidence of these markers after delivery. He didn't want me panicking for no reason. Ten weeks later, we had an ultrasound where, sure enough, everything cleared right up just like he said it would.
I just went in for an appointment and during a run-of-the-mill conversation about what to expect as we get closer, he told me that he prefers not to let patients to past their due dates and not at all past week 41, if he can help it. His exact words were, "It's the babies who pay for it." I won't bore you with the details, but there was some information I thought was common like "If you get induced, you'll be more likely to need a c-section" and he explained that most doctors don't induce until you are already likely to need a c-section and some other information that clouds that statistic.
I'm not saying either way is right or wrong just that it's probably best decided with your doctor, who knows this stuff in and out and has done this hundreds of times. If I were you, I would write down any concerns you have about induction, any questions or information you've heard and call your doctor back or set up an appointment. He or she will be glad to give you advice and certainly it doesn't sound like he/she is pushing you to do it, just telling you the option is there. If you've received good care to this point, I think you can trust your doctor not to suddenly get cavalier about the whole thing.
