Hi Moms,
my son got his first packet of homework which is letter tracing, identifying letters, numbers, colors, etc. its about 10 pages and we have from Monday-Monday to turn it in. we started yesterday and it was a nightmare. he refuses to hold the pencil. he is working with an OT on that, but I really just want to make it not so miserable for him. any tips?
Re: Any tips with homework time (ASD Kindergatener)
I'm just going to say that 10 pages of HOMEWORK for a KINDERGARTENER is OUTRAGEOUS.
And that's all I'm going to say about that.
I'll disagree. The ten pages is to be done over the course of 7 days. The teacher is not expecting all ten pages to be done in one night.
DS is in OT for writing. When he was in kindergarten, he had a special pencil (Tricondaroga - they are fat and shaped like a triangle instead of round). The ones he had were black. They were helpful (the only problem is they don't fit in a regular sharpener - you have to sharpen them manually).
Ditto with crayons - get the fat kind.
It IS a struggle. In addition to OT, see if he can get special ed / basic skills / resources for handwriting.
Also, if it is taking too much time (ie: something that a regular 5 year old could cut in 5 minutes takes your son 15) - I don't see anything wrong with allowing your DS to do some, then doing some on your own and having him do the pasting. Especially the things that require fine motor skills. I don't believe in "Doing my child's homework" - but the purpose of homework is practice, and you want the hw experience to be positive.
