After many attempts from my best friend to get me to join The Bump, here I am....on bended knee for help! This is my very first post, so bare with me!
My son, Tucker, 10, was diagnosed with ADHD in 2009 and we started with Concerta 18 mg. He done great with it from the start but then every year since we have had to increase his dosage. He is currently on 36 mg. of Concerta and has been since the beggining of last year. We and his teachers have been seeing new behaviors such as seeing him anger easily, indessisivness, lacking motivation and attitude with his peers. He also has had an attitude which I am sure is him being a ten year old boy as well as seeing this from his 13 year old half brother and 15 year old cousin. Anyways, we went to his doctor yesterday and reported all these things to her. She suggested that we leave his Concerta at 36mg. and add Intuniv 2mg to his current regimine. I wanted someone elses opinion so I called my friend which referred my here. My question is....or my options are............Concerta 36mg. with Intuniv 2mg 1 time a day.............or Aderall(sp?) 2 times a day ....................or Ritalin 3 times a day, which means he is going to have to take it at school.
Any advice would be appreciated!
*We tried Straterra for a summer and it was terrible medication for him. He did not do well with it at all.
Re: ADHD Medication
Just PCP manages medications.
Now that you mention it.....his teacher last year ask me if we thought about him seeing a counselor because he does tend to bottle his emotions up. I ask the counselor at school if she would meet with him and she said she would. Meeting with this year's teacher last week regarding behavior issues (that has NEVER been issues in the past) I ask if he was meeting with her and she said no that she would check into it.
Being a mental health specialist/counselor myself, I find it hard to admit my own child needs help, but if that's the case, its what he will get. You said pyschiatrist, is this for managment of medications, counseling, both?
I actually ask my DH about counseling yesterday but he disregarded it as him being a 10 year old. There is a history of mental illness in my family, primarily being my maternal grandmother who was hospitalized many many times and ended up taking her own life. I don't want to say that that will happen to my baby but it is still a factor.
Thank you all so much for your advice. It is great to get others views of the situation. Especially from an adult who suffers from the same thing. I hate the fact that he is even on medication to begin with but it has been a Godsend for his academics and lets be honest, my sanity!!!
@daves_sweetpea.........how is your appetite when taking Ritalin vs. Concerta?
Right now, DS eats a great breakfast, very very very little at lunch and a decent(could be better) supper. I can't help but think with Ritalin he would have a better appetite, but I could be wrong. He is in the 25 percentile of weight right now, but it still worries me because he is little for his age........well that is compared to the other boys in his class.
