How long were you able to keep up exercise and what were you doing?

I'm 24 weeks, and am still doing a one mile walk about three days a week and swimming for 30 minutes about three days a week.  Otherwise, I'm just doing some stretching every night.  My MFM recommended that I stop pilates and weightlifting at 20 weeks, so I have, but I really miss it.

What do your routines look like mid-pregnancy?  When did you have to slow down even more?

  • I ran until 21 weeks - 25 miles a week until about 16 weeks, then about 12 a week until 21 weeks. It started to get really uncomfortable at the end. I had slight placenta previa, so had to be on pelvic rest anyway, so I stopped. I continued to walk 2.5 miles 3 times a week until I went on bed rest at 33 weeks.

I lifted until bed rest too, but I just didn't have time because I was working so much at that point. I did one upper body lift, one lower body, and one core exercise about once a week.

My doctors/nurses encouraged me to keep doing things until I felt uncomfortable. I think they trusted my judgement.

  • I was walking 3 miles a day up to about 24 weeks. Then I went down to 1-2 miles. At 26 weeks, my cervix was only 2cm so my doctor told me to stop all unnecessary activity. Now I am so uncomfortable I am not sure I could make it around the block. "The wall" is very real!

  • I went to the gym two times a week until week 30 when my ob asked me to stop going until after 34 weeks. I was walking on the treadmill for 40 minutes and doing some light lifting. Obviously I didn't get back to the gym until my doctor gave me the all clear as I had the babies at just about 34 weeks.

  • I did water aerobics and swimming three times a week for the entire pregnancy.  I waddled into my last class less than a week before my induction.  Getting into the water felt really good.
