Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Calculating Baby's age???

This may seem like a silly question but how do you calculate a baby's age? When my son was born we went by weeks. So every Tuesday he was a week older. A friend has a son that was born on the same day as our son but she seems to be going by the day of the month. Our sons were both born on March 6, so on the 6th of every month her son is a month older. Since I have been following the weeks my son always seems to be older than him and that can't be. According to weeks, my son should be 7 months old (28 weeks) on Tuesday. However, everyone else seems to think he will be 7 months on October 6. I know it's not a big deal but I have been taking a picture of him every month and now I don't know which method to follow. Plus, I feel like a dork that I don't know this.  So, do I continue to follow weeks or just go by the 6th of every month? What is the norm here?

 Thank you!

Fibroids discovered and removed October 2005. Pathology came back with suspicious results (potential cancer) and had a partial hysterectomy January 2006. I still have both ovaries. September 2009, DH and I travelled to Mumbai, India for gestational surrogacy but it didn't work. We tried again September 2010 and it didn't work again. By this time we decided to expand our family through adoption. Home study completed February 14, 2011. Matched with a birth mom August 1, 2011. Match failed September 8, 2011. Matched with a new birth mom January 2012. Our baby boy was born March 6, 2012. Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker

Re: Calculating Baby's age???

  • Do you celebrate your own birthday because it's a Tuesday x number of weeks after you were born, or do you celebrate it because it's the actual date you were born? Your son will be six months old on September 6 and seven months old on October 6.

I will never understand where people got the idea that one month equals four weeks. That is only true ONE month out of the year (February), and even then, it's only true three out of four years. Most months have 4 and a half weeks in them. If you go by the "rule" that 4 weeks equals a month, then there are actually 13 months in a year. (Since 52 divided by 4 equals 13.)

This. After K was maybe 13 weeks we switched to monts. If you try telling people your baby is, say, 28 weeks old, their eyes will glaze over and they'll be like "yyyyyyy ???".

Same goes for people who continue giving a child's age in MONTHS any time after the child's 2nd birthday. Do I give a f""" that your kid is 32 months old? not so much.

They're right.  Babies turn another month older on the DATE they were born just like they turn another year older on the exact anniversary of the day they were born.

This. I think the confusion all stems from people thinking pregnancies last 9 months, while they are actually a bit longer.

Yes This drove me crazy when we were pregnant (and people who were 36 weeks would be all like, "I'm 9 months pregnant!!" No, you're not), and it drives me crazy now.

Oh man, I know what you mean. In the book "The Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy," it actually SAYS that pregnancy lasts ten months with this exact logic behind it. After I read that, I felt like the author wasn't really qualified to be offering me any helpful tips on pregnancy.

  • Day of month since all months have different number of weeks. I stopped counting weeks at like 12 when my maternity leave ended!
  • Thank you everyone for the input. I just didn't know when to stop referring to his age in weeks but it definitely makes sense to go by the day of the month. Thanks for helping me clear this up!!

You took the words right out of my mouth. This is a pet peeve of mines lol. I absolutely hate it when parents do this past a certain age.

YES.  I even made a Facebook post stating exactly what you just did.  WHERE do people get that 1 month = 4 weeks?!?!?
