When you donate, do you expect something in return? I'm talking about donating to Goodwill and getting the Tax sheet back, or donating hair to Locks of Love and wanting a certificate back, etc....[Poll]
I actually only donate every once in awhile but when I do, I don't ever ask for a receipt or anything. Even if I did want to write it off, I would probably lose it before tax time anyways.
For cash donations, I want a receipt. For stuff/junk I am just getting rid of, no. We did donate a bunch of scrap metal to my DH's church a while back and there was talk of a receipt, since it was worth more than $100. I don't remember if we actually got one or not though. Sometimes every little bit helps at tax time, so there is no harm in getting one and it doesn't make your donation "worth less", if you do.
When I moved out of my townhouse like 4 months ago, I didn't want to pay for storage so I gave everything to a mother/child shelter. I mean everything.. brand new entertainment center, couches, chairs, pots, pans, etc. None of it was recorded so I won't be getting any kind of tax write off or anything. And I always get suckered into giving 1-2$ at the checkout counter when they have those charity deals. I've never actually thought of getting anything in return.. I thought charity WAS giving without getting.

We definitely do the charity auction thing, obviously we get something there. But then and otherwise, we still don't need to itemize our deductions, so I don't bother with a receipt or anything. If we did itemize, then I would certainly do it!

I voted SS. I've donated to Goodwill in the past and didn't want anything to show for it but we just gave a TON of stuff a couple weekends ago that didn't sell at our garage sale. The garage sale was supposed to help pay for some baby expenses but nothing sold so I took the tax slip from Goodwill that time. It will at least help a little bit. And I've donated to Locks of Love before but the certificate never showed up. I was looking forward to it just to see what it looked like but I couldn't care less now and it would have ended up in the trash. So I guess I don't usually expect something in return but sometimes it'd be nice.
I'm a SS -- I want a receipt for tax purposes when we give significant monetary donations (at church or to charities or whatever) but I don't want anything if I'm just giving a few dollars here or a bag of old clothes there.

Sometimes I fill a bag and can't wait to get rid of it so I drop it at a 24hr drop off place, but if I have a bunch of stuff I like to log it on the receipt for when I do my taxes. Any monetary donations are made by check so I don't need a receipt.
