Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

We Got Rid of The Paci Without Tears!!! :D :D!

Oh My Goodness... I didn't think it was possible.

My 23 Month old is So stinkin addicted to her pacifier. When I tried going cold turkey getting rid of it when she was 18 months old she literally cried all day long, nothing would sooth her. She even cried the entire time I gave her a bath. They weren't small cries, they were full blown screaming.

I gave in after 8 hours of her crying and tried again a week later.

Failed again... so I decided to wait it out.

It was an unintentional way of getting rid of the thing.

She had become very VERY Tantrumy with that thing. If she got upset she would scream bloody murder for it. Then she sarted this thing if she was mad, she would just let it fall from her mouth and stand there and stare at you... lol I have no idea why she does this. So I would pick it up and say since you don't want it I guess I'll keep it and she would cry and scream for her "nunu" so I would end up giving it back. It was becoming a nightmare! I knew I had to just suck it up soon and take it away.

So I threw all of her pacifiers away except for one.

I told her, this is Alexa's Last Nunu.

Then just yesterday she accidentally dropped her Pacifier behind the bed. and she couldn't reach it. So I "Tried" to get it for her. I secretly grabbed it and hid it. (I know.. you shouldn't lie to your children... but I did...) and I said "Uh oh.... Nu Nu Went bye bye." and Alexa said "Oh No NuNu" and she kept looking down the crack to see if she could see it. and kept saying "Oh noo" and then I said "Tell NuNu Bye Bye" and she said "Bye Bye NuNu See Ya Later"

and I told her since she was such a big girl at saying Bye Bye to NuNu we would get her some candy. I've givin her a couple of smarties before.

So we went to Walmart and bought a small bag of smarties. So everytime she brought up her NuNu I reminded her that we got Candy since NuNu went bye bye. and she would say "Yea, candy"

So I've been giving her 3 small smarties at snack time and right after dinner to remind her that we got candy in place of NuNu.

We actually went to bed last night without the Pacifier! OH MY GOSH!! I'm beyond shocked! She has never ever been able to sleep without it, and often would wake up at night crying for it because she lost it.

And now she is taking her nap NuNu free.

I'm soo happy we got rid of that thing so easily I could cry.

I know candy isn't a good replacement. But anything to get rid of that stupid pacifier I don't care. Too me candy will be an easier thing to get rid of. By replacing with sugarfree sweets or Vitamin C Gummies and use them as rewards. And slowly change the sweets into something else.

Just wanted to share, I'm just so happy! :D:D hopefully in 2 more days her Paci will be out of her mind completely! :)

  • Thank you for giving me hope! I'm not ready to take it away yet, since my son is a late (and miserable) teether, but I have been dreading the eventual disaster when we take them away.

  • That is awesome, my DD is attached to hers as well.  Every time she starts teething again, it gets worse.  I feel bad because she only has 4 bottom teeth, and the others have to come in at some point, but I know I need to get rid of the paci soon!

  • Awesome! I'm from the "whatever works" school of thought when it comes to quitting the paci.  Good for you! What a big girl. :)
