How often does your LO go to the bathroom?

DD has been potty trained for about two months.  Once she decided she was potty trained, she hasn't had any accidents, even at night.  The problem, however, is that she will go HOURS and HOURS without going to the bathroom. She flips out when I ask her if she has to go to the bathroom, so I have stopped bugging her, but its so stressful and I'm worried she will get a UTI.

She won't go when she first wakes up in the morning--she'll wait until she's been up for an hour or so, maybe 8am.  She's a grouch when she wakes up, and if I try to force it, she'll throw a tantrum.  Then I'll try to get her to go before her nap--12 or 1ish, but if she is too tired, she will throw a tantrum. Often, she'll have quiet time instead of a nap, and I'll discover she went #1 and #2 during that time.  If I'm lucky, she'll go again in the late afternoon, but often she doesn't until bedtime, and if its too late, she won't go before she falls asleep.  So she's going about 3 times a day.  Yesterday, she only went twice.

How often does your LO go? Obviously, I need to get her to drink more, but any other suggestions to not make the toilet the site of all of our tantrums?

  • DS goes every 3 to 4 hours I make him go before leaving the house or before nap. DS also gets really annoyed if I keep asking him if he needs to go!

  • My oldest can hold it all.day.long. if I ask he says no. At that age he waited till nap time and bed time. Now, he will go first thing in the morning and once during the day time, then right before bed. My youngest does not hold his bladder as well and can go on the potty all.day.long. I think it can be normal, but you know your child best. My middle son is right in the middle with how much he uses the potty. Some mornings they all need to go right away, sometimes they wait.

  • normally about 4x a day

I try to remind her before we go anywhere, but she refuses.  The ONLY time I force it is when she starts doing a pee pee dance and I can tell she needs to go immediately.

  • DD never goes in the morning. I make her go before she gets dressed. She's never had any problems. She goes maybe 4-5x a day.

  • About 4 times a day. Sometimes 5 and very rarely 3. I did read an article that it's better for them to get in the habit of going fairly regularly rather than waiting till they're desperate--something about how that affects bladder development. But like you it's hard to know how to handle that when they fight you on it. :/ Mine usually go when they first get up (though Will still sleeps in a pull-up so sometimes when we get him up he's already peed in that), right before lunch (though sometimes they insist they don't need to and wait till nap, i.e. 6 hrs), right before nap if they didn't go right before lunch, sometimes right after nap, and then right before bed.

  • So basically your child has had zero potty accidents since she was trained about 2 months ago and you are flipping over it?  I am missing something here.  Some kids have great bladders and just don't need to go potty that often just like some adults I know.  I envy those people.  I am one of those people that on some days, need to pee hourly.  My older DD is like me and her bladder just can't hold as much (it runs in my family as my one sister is like me as has taken the medicine to help her have better bladder control).  My older DD can go 12 hours without having to pee and without having an accident.  I used to push her on it and then realized that it was a battle not worth having.  She has learned that she knows when she has to go and when she doesn't.  If we are going to be in the car for a long time or going someplace that does not have a bathroom that we can easily get too, we have a rule that she has to at least try and sit on the potty and sing her ABC's.  If she finishes and has not gone potty, we move on and if she does go potty - great.  I do keep a travel potty in the car but I can't even remember the last time we used it - I am guessing it was on one of our really long car trips (we drive 11 hours to my parents a few times a year) and at times have had to use it when we are in the stretch that is in the middle of nowhere or we get stuck in traffic but honestly that doens't happen very often as we stop every few hours and everyone tries so we can avoid stopping every hour.  As long as she is not having accidents, I would let her be.  She knows when she needs to go potty.  Are you giving her a pull-up at nap time?  I couldn't tell from your post.  If so, I would stop so that she will use the potty and not her pull-up.
