Moving & Tipping

I posted a few weeks back about tips for our first non-DITY move and got some very helpful responses.  We are coming up on our move very soon and I have another question - tipping?  Do you tip the packers, movers on the day they pick up, and/or movers on the day they drop off?  If so, how much?  I have always heard that you should feed them and plan on doing such, but I am not sure what the proper procedure for tipping is.  What do you do?

Re: Moving & Tipping

  • we dont feed them or tip them. we have tried to feed them the last 3 times and they all said no because they were on special diets, needed a break, brought their own food etc . they also let me on on a little secret that their company gives them money for lunch. anyway we dont give them a meal anymore. We also dont tip. last move we had over 20 guys from 4 different companies all coming at different times and the guys didnt know each other so if we gave a tip when they were done the guys who came at the beginning and did most of the work wouldnt see any of it. we have tipped before and that was the worst move. this time we didnt tip or feed and we had the best move so tipping doesnt make your move any better. also if you feel 10+ guys, give a tip etc it gets expensive. we have moved 4 times in 2 years. the money adds up and they dont expect it... just my 2 cents

  • also our last movers said with the food they get so sick of pizza and fast food and when people buy it and dont ask what they want they feel obligated to eat it. oftentimes pizza is the only option because it delivers and i dont like leaving the house with just the movers. so when you order I would ask first what they want. I also make snacks. Last time I had little peach cobblers, ice cream, chips and brownies and they loved it

  • We don't tip.

I've only been through one PCS move. We ordered pizza and I had some homemade cookies, and they seemed to like that. (Though PP has a good point - I'm sure they get pizza a lot.)

We only had a few guys do the unpacking, and honestly I got so mad at them that I don't think they deserved a tip. But that's another post for another day.

  • I left out some snacks and a cooler of water. No cash tip though.
  • Thanks everyone!  They probably do get sick of fast food.  I never thought of that.

  • We got our movers/packers some Subway

  • Our movers and packers have always taken off for an hour or two for a lunch break, so we never provide food.  We do usually keep water and gatorade on hand for anyone who wants some, especially if it's a hot day.  We've never tipped either, too many people in and out of the house at all times, making it too difficult to tell if someone has been there all day or if they've just shown up to do the heavy lifting.

  • No cash tip just left out snacks.  I did cracker with cheese and cookies.  I had soda and bottled water.  They picked at it but didn't eat too much.  They seemed more interested in just getting the unloading done and out of there.

One good tip I got was to not offer anything too greasy.  You would hate for them to handle your lines and etc. with greasy hands.

  • Wow, I've never thought of them getting sick of pizza before, but it really makes sense.

That said, we've always tipped generously and had pizza, drinks, sometimes snacks, or if it was early, muffins and coffee.  They seemed to appreciate it.

After reading all this though, I'm starting to wonder...  however, I don't think we would feel right if we didn't at least have a cooler of drinks.  Sure it's not required but especially if it's hot, I think it's just a kind gesture.

  • I think we've tipped before but can't honestly remember. We do keep drinks onhand and usually offer lunch but we always ask first.

I tend to not want to tip because you don't know until you unpack the boxes how well they did. Our last move I thought they did very well. Yeah, not so much. It was a nightmare unpacking so I would've been very upset if we had tipped for such a craptastic job.
  • Don't tip them. They should not be excepting any cash tips at all,it's in their contract and I would report any that mentioned tips.

We get a box of coffee and donuts in the AM and stock water bottles and soda.

  • I always have just drinks available. I've asked if they want lunch before (usually when I'm getting myself food) and they've always declined.

  • This last pcs, I planned on tipping but not providing lunch. My thought was "I don't go to work and expect my employer to provide lunch." wrong! They actually asked me to go get it for them! I had provided soda water and Gatorade which I think was plenty. I ended up spending quite a bit on burgers for these guys and I wish I hadreplanned and ordered pizza ahead of time. I'm not trying to be rude or stingy but I was flabbergasted when they requested lunch. Also they did a crap job as they didn't pack our tv I'm the correct type of box so of course it was broken. Next time I'll be more prepared!
