Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Holy heck, we are in trouble ..

Wow...my DD is one strong willed chick. I would leave it at that, but I straight up need advice.

She 'was' (is) on Neocate.  We've been doing yogurt for about a week and a half, and have NOT watched food in regards to milk products and she has done very well.  Not having any reaction at all. We were going to go to Nutramigen...Well, that was a FAIL!  She hated it and threw..no joke...THREW her bottle.

At her one year, Pedi said, since she's doing so well with the milk products to try a little milk (2-4 oz) a day in a week and then offer water/juice/ and wean off of formula.

Well, guess what, sister wants nothing to do with ANYTHING other than her formula.  For real.  She throws her bottle when anything else is in it, I try to hold her and 'feed' her, nothing is working! I am diluting her formula big time.  I.E. 2 oz with a ton of water and that is the only thing she will drink.  I did get 2 oz of whole milk down her yesterday and we have had no reaction.  But, tried today and she again turned her nose at it along with everything else.

We are at the end of formula days, people.  We have half a can left.  I'm not going to buy more or ask for a sample from the pedi because frankly, she doesn't need formula anymore being that she's one & that was my pedi's advice.

help! Advice! Words of Wisdom!  Empathy!  What in the world will she drink?  She is a bear too when she isn't getting her formula.  WOW!

TIA...a bunch! :):)

  • Just Do it :)  Most kids react like that.  It takes a few transition days.  Just make sure she is getting enough fluids while she is transitioning and getting some calcium by way of yogurt, etc.

  • Stop putting it in her bottle. She could be expecting the formula taste and it's confusing when she's getting something new. Try using a sippy or an actual cup.

  • Have you tried cutting the formula with the milk/ instead of water? That is how I got mine transitioned. I started with 1oz of milk in her formula, and upped an ounce every few days.

  • Definitely cut the bottle and go straight to the sippy. It always seems easiest just to transition both at the same time so they're not expecting one thing and getting another.

I may have missed part of your post, but does she like water? My LO TBH isn't the best milk drinker but I try to feed her calcium otherwise and she drinks water like the well is going dry :) so I don't worry. Not every kid likes milk, nor do they necessarily have to.

Otherwise, cold turkey all the way. Keeop offering water/regular milk. She'll be thirsty sooner than later..I promise. She won't drink though if you cave even once, but she'll keep expecting it!

  • Try putting the milk, water etc in a sippy cup instead.  That is what we did at first.  Bottle was for Formula and sippy was for milk or water.  I started with a NUK sippy with the really rubbery spout that is similar to a bottle nipple and it worked for us.  Good Luck!

  • oh my goodness, I left out a huge part of our dilemma...

she can't stand sippy cups.  I have tried like, all of them.  She throws them as well. I mean really, she turns her head at them!  I feel like I'm going crazy!

This is what I did as well.  Also put it in a sippy cup instead of a bottle.  Also she will throw it but don't worry.  She will eventually realize that that is all she's getting and start drinking it.  Sometimes DD still throws her cup when I give her her sippy but I think she's just looking for a reaction.  GL!

  • My DD did the same thing and i just added a scoop of formula to her milk until she got used to it...now she loves her milk and asks for it!

Exactly this. Every week she had one less ounce of formula and one more ounce of milk.

  • I had a friend who had this same problem with her daughter, so she put a little bit of strawberry syrup in her milk.  As the girl started to like it, she slowly put less and less syrup in.  Obviously, strawberry or chocolate syrup has a lot of sugar, so maybe just make sure she's not getting too much sugar from other things while you're doing it.  But it worked for my friend.  Or, if she's at a healthy weight, just go cold turkey from the formula and if she refuses milk for a few days, so be it.  She'll probably come around.

  • I would try giving millk with a straw.  Some kids skip the sippy's and go straight for straws.  My DS will drink Milk from a sippy but not water.  Water must come from a straw or water bottle.

Don't put milk in the bottle, she'll be expecting her formula... When we started with milk we went straight to sippy

  • Mix formula with milk or add honey to milk. Um you can use a regular straw with a cup and see if she does that. Sippies are hard to pull from so that maybe why she hates it. You can try the cheap take and toss brand which are not fancy but very easy and simple to use.
  • My son was on Neocate as well under 14 months. I was scared to death to tryo regular milk.  So when I did, this is what we did...I would put one ounce of regular milk in with the formula.  So one ounce of mile to 7 of formula.  Then every oher day I would change the ratios.  It worked well for us.  The only problem we have now is that he will only drink milk out of a bottle.  Wont even try milk in a sippy.  Dr. is't worried as long as he is getting milk.  Good luck.
  • Also, remember that your LO doesn't have a switch that says, "I'm 12 months old now, I don't need or want a bottle."  Not every kid is ready at 12 months old just because a doctor says it's okay to give up the bottle - it might be 13 or 14 months.  In all honesty, if she is getting a bottle, is happy and healthy with it, let her continue for another few weeks and try again.  We did this with my LO, and he takes his milk out of a sippy fine now; he did it on his own at 14 months.
  • My LO was bf so she didn't really know how to hold a bottle or sipy so I got her one of those cups with a straw in it and she loved it.
