If you haven't started solids, how often do you feed?

Just wondering what everyone else is doing.  We have been doing 3-hourly lately.  He used to want to feed all.day (every 1.5-2.5hrs) but now it's slowed down and he's not hungry until the 3 hour mark.

Is anyone feeding 4-hourly?

You'd think with just milk they'd want MORE frequent, but it seems like mine wants less frequent feeds now.

  • I just noticed about a week ago that she doesn't nurse near as much as she used to. I would say it's every 3-4 hours and the sessions don't last long either.

  • He averages every 3 hours.. In the morning he will usually go 4 hours, and then he only does 2 hours between his final 2 feeds of the day.

  • He eats 1 tablespoon of oatmeal once a day but I don't consider that to be "starting solids." He eats every 3 hours and sometimes his feeds only last like 5 minutes and he's done.

  • I'm still at about 2 hours and 15 minutes. Today daycare told me they want her eating more, too. Bleh. It's hard to keep up and I always feel stressed when I have to go somewhere wo her.

  • I've been trying to push it closer to every 3 hours lately with the hope that he'd eat a little more each time and maybe go a little longer at night. He was eating every 2 hours. This was on the advice of a LC.

Owen is the baby of the group though, so take that into consideration.

  • He goes every 3 hours at least, it is completely normal and once they start doing this you can get him on a schedule where he eats breakfast, lunch, and dinner with snacks in between when he does start eating solids.  You can try to increase the amount.  DS takes 8 oz and eats 4 times a day.  Sometimes he doesn't take the full 8 and he wants the rest a couple hours later but other wise that has worked well for us.

  • We were every 3 until the last couple weeks when my supply took a hit, now it's every 2 if he's awake. DD did like every 90 mins until she was 7 months so 3 hours was heaven to me!

  • Every 3 or so, though when I get home from work she usually wants to eat soon even if it's not been close to 3 since her last bottle. I'm guessing it's a comfort thing.

Sometimes I feel like when we aren't doing anything she wants it more often but if we are out and about, distracted etc she might go longer.

I was wondering if more spaced feeds and bigger bottles would help with night stretches being longer but she doesn't seem to want more than 5oz at a time.

  • FF -- approx. every 3 hours, but she's starting to be able to go longer sometimes too. I still try to feed her every 3 hours, though, unless she's been napping. We have a good schedule worked out, and I don't want to mess with it! But it's nice that she CAN go longer, like if we're out somewhere with her on the weekends.
  • We FF but he eats every 4 hours during the day. 7 oz. he eats at 4:30 am, 8:30 am, 12:30 pm 4:30 pm at 7 pm he gets 1 tablespoon of cereal and he gets a bottle at 8:30 pm. then he doesn't eat again until about 4:30.
