Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

should I be exposed to shingles?

My friend has shingles, and we're supposed to see each other tomorrow night. Her dr. said it's okay for her to go out and do things since the sores are not exposed. I've had chicken pox, so I'm not worried about myself. But, I'm wondering if I could carry the virus home to LO even if I don't touch her.

WDYT? Am I worrying for nothing?

Re: should I be exposed to shingles?

  • You can get shingles if u have had the chicken pox. Iv had chicken pox 2 times and then I had shingles. When I had it my doctor told me pretty much not to.go anywhere for like 3 weeks and I had it on my rib cage so it was covered.

  • DH had shingles this past winter. LO was only 5 months and I called the doctor to ask what we should do. They said for LO not to come into contact with anything that DH was in contact with. I researched quite a bit and found that a person with shingles cannot give another person shingles. They can however give someone chicken pox. #1 I wouldn't risk exposing your LO. #2 When DH had them he didn't feel like doing anything- they were very painful- I'm surprised your friend still wants to go out. I'd say if you can reschedule- it isn't worth the risk.

  • You'll be fine, as will LO It's not like you're going to be rubbing up against where the outbreak is. It'll be covered. Just wash your hands. If you're that concerned, change clothes before you hold your LO.

  • Personally I wouldn't risk it.  Just wait until your friend is better.

  • It's actually quite difficult to get shingles. Unless you are actively touching an open sore then licking your hand, the chances of contracting shingles is extremely low.

This. I've had them and this is what the doc told me. Mine were on my neck for all to see. If she is on acyclovir (Zovirax) than that should help too. As others have stated though, it is quite painful and if it were me I would want to be home resting.

  • Thanks, everyone. After posting this I also remembered that when I was PG my OB told me not to be exposed to them.

I think I'm going to ask my friend to reschedule. Hopefully she'll understand.

  • You can't catch shingles..you can get chicken pox from the only the liquid/puss in blisters you get from shingles, not from coughing etc.

No worries about bringing it home!

She may not want to go out....shingles is very painful!!!  I had it and it was a few weeks of horrible nerve pain.  I caught it early and started anti viral meds.     I didn't catch it from anyone it just comes out in your system.
