Blood in the milk?

The other day, I was pumping and afterward kind of clipped my nipple with my nail. Hurt a little, but didn't think much of it. I noticed a drop of blood on my shirt, but it wasn't actively bleeding or anything. Today, I noticed the milk I pumped had a few drops of blood siting at the bottom of the bottle. Is this safe for LO, or should I dump it?

Re: Blood in the milk?

  • I would think it would be fine. I had cracked nipples in the beginning and I know my LO drank some blood since he spit up pink once or twice.

  • It's safe. If there's too much it might irritate your LO's stomach, but there would have to be a lot for that to happen.

  • Under normal circumstances your blood is sterile and contains loads of antibodies.  Don't worry about it.
