Hi ladies! I'm mainly a lurker, but I need some advice. This is my second pregnancy and I'm set on a water birth, just not where to have it! I labored in the tub with DD until the last second when the nurses made me get out to push so I feel like a full water birth is definitely the road I want to take (especially since it's an option this time). The decision on WHERE is partially weighing on my GD screening: if I pass, I can have a water birth at the hospital or the center. If I fail, I can only have it at the center. I have no history of GD but can't help but to be anxious about it.
So, assuming I fail, my only options are a "traditional" hospital birth or to have the water birth at the center. This makes me nervous since GD is a medium risk issue--I wouldn't want any complications away from the hospital. I'd be comfortable using the center (and probably will) if I DON'T have GD but I'm concerned about being away from medical treatment if something arises due to GD. My question is WWYD in this situation if you had GD? Go with a traditional hospital birth or still use the center even at medium risk?
My test is next week so I may be panicking over nothing, but it's weighing on my mind....I know this all seems neurotic but any advice, insight or personal experiences with this would be much appreciated!
Re: Hospital water birth vs. Birthing Center water birth
Have you talked to the birth centre? Would they take you with gd? My understanding, which may not be accurate, is that gd risks you out of care at a birth centre. If it doesn't, and you end up having gd, talk to them to determine what their comfort level is. Are they close to a hospital in case a transfer is required?
FWIW, on my tour of our hospital birthing center (which has separate water birthing suites) one of the midwives said "there have been 'accidental' water births in the regular suite tubs - some women just can't get out" and gave us a wink.
So I wonder if having GD has to do with continuous fetal monitoring? Otherwise, you can stay in the tub in your birthing suite as long as you possibly can - if you are not having vaginal checks, no one will know how far along you are, right?
