Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

13 month and bowel movement

Ladies - So we have been on milk about 6 weeks now. My 13 month old son is having a TERRIBLE time when it comes to poop. I feel so bad for him. To put it bluntly he poops like a man. Solid. He cries and his poor little legs shake every time he has to go.

Dr recommending giving a little pear juice daily but this just is not working. He either tore something inside or now he is just afraid to poop because it hurt him so many times.

Any suggestions? I hate to see him cry and shake.

  • Ugh, I know how you feel.  Our DD has had poop issues since birth!

Our pedi recommended putting miralax in her milk once a day.  Miralax has a cap with lines on it and we put it up until the first line, which is like 1/4 the cap.

It has really helped!  We went from the horrible hard painful poops to somewhat normal poops.

  • I am sorry to hear. Only thing you can do IMO is comfort him. If you see him having a hard time rub his back or even try a warm bath. Also I suggest doing what your Dr. said but with prunes. Also try to feed more fruits throughout the day. Good luck and I hope this passes for you and your LO.

  • We went through something similiar with the milk transition too. Lasted about 2 weeks and then we had a week of weird diarahea like stuff so be prepared for that too.

The one thing that worked for me was to feed one of those food pouches of prunes or a prune mix at breakfast. She sucked them down no problem and it really worked. Also, I limited the milk for a bit too until she got used to it more.

  • we have diaper rash problem with milk so I mix his whole milk with some almond milk or soy milk and it has really helped his poop is just like idk tmi fluffy textured not hard or too soft

  • When we transitioned and DS had some painful BM's, I bought a bottle of prune juice and would give him 3-4 oz a day.  It worked within a day or two and he seemed to like the juice.  Lately we've had the opposite problem so I haven't had to try it lately.  It might be easier to buy than pear juice too.  GL!  I hope your LO (and you) get some relief soon!

  • That actually sounds a lot like my daughter.  I ended up taking her to a GI specialist who recommended going dairy free.  On a lark i put her on both a gluten free and dairy free diet.  The screaming stopped immediately.  I wish I had switched earlier.  In her case, gluten is definitely a factor.  Dairy may or may not be, but I'm keeping her on the dairy and gluten free diet until she's verbal and can tell us if she doesn't feel good.

  • Thank you ALL so much for your help and guidance. I will definately be taking it all into consideration and trying it. Seems like the Prune juice is a big hit. I sure hope it works because seeing him cry and shake just breaks my heart!

    Thanks again Ladies :)
