So, I married a Greek....(baby name thoughts)

Yeah, so our baby HAS to have a Greek name which I am fine with.  This is both a cultural pressure as well as a religious thing since we are both Greek Orthodox so the baby needs a Greek name for baptism and I want one with a name day.  (It's like a birthday but a bigger deal to Greeks)  Anyway I've found some that I think are cute but the list is short.

The middle name will be Margarita no matter what.  This is after my husband's mother who passed away.  We are not using it as the first name for obvious reasons!  (It's a flower in Greece)

Here is my short list:

Sophia Margarita (I have always loved Sophia, this is also the name of a favorite aunt.  I have issues with the popularity but hubby doesn't since there are so many repeated names for Greeks it's not uncommon to have many kids in in the same family with the same name.)

Alexandra Margarita (Husband like.  I like as well and will probably end up calling her Alex, which might be weird since baby's only uncle is Alex and my mom has a cat named Alex.... But still a really cute name)

Kalliope Margarita (or Calliope)  Would use Kalli (calli) as a nickname.  I think this is pretty cute, very original, Calliope was one of the 7 Muses.  But a bit worried about Kalli/Kelly confusion issues.  Also both husband and I have names that start with K...(is that even an issue?)

Euphemia Margarita (Effi)  Effi is a very popular Greek girls name, would never go by Euphemia except on paper!    Hubby likes and Effi and I think it's pretty cute too.

Thoughts from the outside world?

  • I like Kalliope the best and don't think there would be any issues with Kalli/Kelly confusion.  I know people with both names and I don't think they have ever really had people call them the wrong thing.

I also really like Effi.  I think it's totally cute.  It is one of the main characters in The Hunger Games movies which the second is coming out right now.  They are likening these movies in popularity/hype to the Twilight movies.

The names may very likely catch on in the next few months/years.  It would be like naming her Bella five years ago, that name has been on the top ten list for several years straight now.  As cute as the name is, I probably would steer clear.  DH and I were highly considering the name Finnick: nn Finn, until we saw the release dates of THG's second movie.

If the potential popularity of the name doesn't bother you, then I would pick that one.  I think it's really cute. All the names are cute, though.  And, I love that you have a heritage and meaning behind them.

Oh man I didn't even think of the Hunger Games connection.  I wonder how many kids will be in my baby's preschool class named Katniss!

  • I like the name Sophia, but she will likely have many Sophia's in her class if that means anything to you.

Calliope is cute. I also like Calli.

So is Effi. My only thought with this one is, while you said it would only be the full name on paper, would this include a class attendance? I only ask because as I supply teacher I know how often I say a kid's full name and get a very frustrated "It's EFFI!" in reply.

    Agreed.

  • Top picks: Effi or Calli

Some insight: Effie Trinket is a character in the hunger games. She is an important character, but not the heroine, so I'm not sure if that might make the name more popular in the future. I think I remember this name being a name in the sisterhood of the traveling pants, but that didn't do anything for its popularity (not that its popularity can be compared to hunger games)...

Cali is my dog's name. She's 7. Only once have I had somebody think her name was Kelly and that was over the phone talking to a new vet after we moved.  Everyone else we encounter who hears her name gets it correct. Also, I've always LOVED the name Calliope.

     GL!

I've always liked the name Theodora for a girl (gift of God), and it's very Greek.

I like kallie But if you use a K name, will you feel forced to only use Ks for future kids since you and DH are K names

Yeah I don't know.  I guess we could avoid it by going with the C spelling which I think is more accepted.

  • I love the NN Effie [I've not seen it spelt Effi but it's fine too] but I'm not a huge fan of Euphemia & I think it's a deal breaker IMO. Are there any other names that could lead to Effie?

I really like Calliope followed by Alexandra then Sophia.

  • I like Kalli, but if your name is Katie, I think that's too sing-songy IMHO.  I also like Effi, but I'd worry about the Hunger Games connection there too.  I love Sophia!

  • Out of the choices I would go for Callie (if you spell it this way there won't be any confusion with Kelly I think) or Effie. Alexandra is pretty but the NN Alex is NMS (in my mind that is a boy's name). Sophia is also pretty of course but personally I wouldn't go for a name that is THAT popular. GL!

  • I am partial to Calliope or Kalliope but I have a daughter named Calliope so.... We go with the nickname of Poppy for her, I did not want her to be called Calli there are too many Calli's!  I read somewhere that Calliope is a popular name in Greece and a lot of the girls there go with Poppy for short.
  • I like Sophia Margarita.  It's very pretty!

My next door neighbors are Greek and their daughters are named Demetra, who is known as Demi, and Efthymia, who is known as Mia, but Effie could be a nickname too.

  • I like Calliope best. I think it's beautiful and original. I'd spell it with a C, I think that while "Kalli" might get called "Kelly" people would get "Calli" right.

  • I like Calliope best, and if you choose it with a C, you avoid any Kalli/Kelly confusion, but honestly I don't think there would be much confusion anyway.

  • I like Calliope, called Callie.  My dad is Greek and my brother and I just had a discussion on Greek names.  I like Penelope and Lydia as well.
  • It may be corny for being mythological (but Calliope is too so I guess it's fine), but I like the names Leda, Artemis, Gaia, Phoebe, Rhea, and Thalia.

  • I actually think they are all cute and love the traditional history behind them too and that you are using a family name for her middle name--that is so special.

That being said I like Alex and Effi the best.  I think they are cute and different!

  • I think they are all beautiful!  We were considering Callista (or Kallista) for awhile, but my DH wanted a more Gaelic name.  I was thinking Callista with nickname Callie!
