Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Advice Needed! Please : (

About 2 weeks and a half ago, my nephew (a 9-mos-old) ran a fever of 103.  The next day, my sister-in-law noticed a rash all over his body.  The parents immediately called their pediatrician and were told it was a 24-hour fever virus.  A day later, blisters appeared all over his face, feet and hands.  They actually took him to the pediatrician-on-call and he told them it was a result of "dry skin."  So without giving it much thought, they brought the baby to a BBQ with them.

The next day, we get a call that my Brother-in-law had contacted the hand-foot-mouth virus known as Coxsackie virus, which is very contagious.  My Brother-in-law got it bad... with large blisters full of pus all over his hands and feet, plus a high fever.  After a few days, we hear that another child, who was at the BBQ, also caught the virus!  So right now, my nephew's rash is completely gone and the other child is back to school also and doing fine.

Yesterday, which is now about 2 weeks after the whole ordeal, my husband tells me he spoke to his brother in person.  According to him, he's still healing from the blisters with skin peeling on his hands and feet but he's still not feeling 100%.  He told him that he felt like he had a slight fever (@ the 99s) and went to the doctor for a further check-up.  Plus, he was sent home from work and told to heal first before coming back!

So here's my dilemma... my nephew's baptism is this Sunday. The reception is taking place in a small restaurant.  I spoke to my pediatrician and he said that the virus is only contagious as long as the person still has the sores in the mouth, a fever, or the blisters.

I just don't feel comfortable bringing my child to the baptism, or for that matter, I don't even feel comfortable going myself.  I don't want to make them feel bad though.  Do you think I'm being paranoid?  From what I've read online, the virus can still be spread even 2 weeks after the rash is gone!  I just don't know what to do.

  • I would leave LO at home and attend the ceremony only, skip the reception and be careful not to touch/hug anyone. And wash my hands well after leaving.

  • I agree with PP.  My LO picked it up at daycare and didn't have it too bad, but he gave it to me and it was awful.  DH only had the fever and 1 blister.  DS was in contact with my parents for maybe 1 hour and about 1.5 to 2 weeks later, they both had a mild case of it.  People will understand if you leave LO home, it is not a fun experience.

  • I wouldnt go. Sorry but thats just a terrible thing to contract and they should be understanding that you dont want to be exposed to it.

  • Try to avoid the reception and wash your hands.
  • I would not go.  The health of my child would outweigh any obligation that I may feel to attend.  DH and I have been in a similar situation, and we stayed home.

  • I'd go to the ceremony to show that you care but skip the reception, too. They should understand.
