Winter coat advice?

I really don't want to spend the money on a maternity winter coat that I will only wear once. Especially since I'm hot all of the time anyway!  Any one out there who has been pregnant in the winter have any advice on what you did???

Re: Winter coat advice?

  • I'm due in February and plan to wear my coat as long as possible (its pretty big on me anyway) and borrow an extra from the hubby those last few weeks! We'll see how long I make it!

  • I had a February and November baby and never bought a winter coat.  I wore a thick hoodie most of the time and just kept my winter coat and a blanket in the car in case I broke down.  The only time I was outside was to walk from my car to my destination.

  • I'm due with a March baby and will need it all winter long so I ended up buying a not quite perfect winter parka from Lands End (2 sizes too big).  I don't know if they have them online anymore since they're sort of back in season but I got a down coat for $40!  It zips but it also has a tie so I figured even if I'm busting out of it, I can at least get it mostly around me and tie it closed.
  • Have you looked on ebay and craigslist? Also, Gap has some amazing in-store, unadvertised sales. Stop in and ask if they're having a sale. That's how I got my coat that I used for DS and I'll use for this pregnancy too. It's really cute and was only $50.

  • I was due last February, but last winter was SUPER MILD. I had also lost 70 lbs before getting pregnant, so was able to wear the jacket from the year before, so I was lucky it wasn't an issue.

I'd definitely say see if you can get one from a consignment/resale shop (bellies to babies, nulook, 9, etc) whether it's maternity or just simply a larger size.

I also know that last year, Bellies to Babies was having a really hard time sourcing maternity coats, and instead had a seamstress come in and make inserts for purchase.

  • I had an April baby this year and did not get a maternity coat.   I was thinking about getting one, but never needed it with how mild the winter was.   Also depending on when you are due.... a lot of jackets went on sale/clearance right after Christmas, so you could try to wait until then?

  • Since I was too big to purchase a warm maternity coat, what I ended up doing was purchasing a black tall Carhartt jacket.  I would highly recommend purchasing a Men's coat since they're designed with "beer gut" in mind..   The Carhartt was SO wonderfully cozy!(the being hot all the time phase ends when it's blowing and below zero!) and it was also the cheaper option compared to purchasing a woman's coat.  The thing to remember is you'll still be in the coat the rest of the winter so you may as well have it for the start, just realize that when you get closer to the end you're going to add a lot of size around the belly area.  After you have baby you won't just spring back into your old size unless you're SUPER lucky.

  • I got one at a garage sale last year.. (because I didn't want to spend the money) and I never wore it because it was so warm last year.. and hormones kept me above temp anyway! lol

It's for someone who's a little more petite.. but you could have it if you wanted it.. just email me, megan.r.chase@gmail.com if you think it would fit you or if you would be interested.
