Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

2 year old & 4 month old sharing a room??

Advice please! We recently found out we are pregnant with our next child. When the baby arrives our DS will be 2 and a couple months old...so my question is do you think it will be okay to have my son and the baby room together (once our baby is about 4/5 months old)? I am worried my toddler will be roaming around freely and on accident throw toys/stuffed animals/etc into the crib where the baby is OR the baby will wake my toddler up... we are in a 2 bedroom and would like to stay here until we have some more  money saved for a bigger down payment on a house.

Any advice welcome!

  • Ask your pediatrician... but if I were in this situation, I would keep the baby in my room until he/she is at least 1 yr old.  Ideally, I wouldn't want them to share a room until the youngest is around 2 years old... but that's just me.  Good Luck!

  • I'd keep the baby in my room for 6 months or more.

  • I wouldn't do it without a video monitor on the baby. If the baby starts crying, the 2 year old might want to "help". A big hurdle for me would be nap time if you SAH. When they're not napping on the same schedule things can get pretty tricky especially if you have a 2 year old who might bust out in tantrum mode while you attempt to get them into bed with a sleeping baby in the same room.

  • My son will be 17 months old when #2 is born. As soon as the new baby is STTN (took until 10 months with my first son), they will be sharing a room.

I have heard of people buying crib tents to protect their infant from toddlers, but I honestly know nothing about the safety of those. I do not plan on using one.

  • In that scenario, I agree with everyone else--keep the baby in your room during the first year or so. Having a 12 month old with stuffed animals in their bed is not as big a deal as a 1 month old.

  • Yikes. I wouldn't do it. So many issues. I would keep the baby in the master. Actually I would anyway for 6 months or longer.

  • DS 1 was 2.5 years old when DS2 was born they started sharing a room when DS2 was 3.5 months old. We never had any issues. DS1 knew not to put anything in the crib and even when DS2 would wake up at night DS1 would never wake up and to this day still doesn't hear him on the nights he wakes up.

  • Interesting topic.

We are having to move into a 2 bedroom apartment and they are 22 months apart.

I think I will keep baby in with us until 6 months.. my only problem is that my toddler is already having horrible jealousy issues so I'm afraid if baby sleeps in my room it will add to the jealousy and she will think... Why does mommy let sissy sleep with her and not me... ahh so frustrating. Then again I may just put the crib in the livingroom for 6 months then move them in together. IDK.
