Pittsburgh Babies

RE Recommendations?

Happy Monday!

I am hoping someone out there can help me... I live about 20 minutes north of Pittsburgh and I wanted to look into an RE (Reproductive Endocrinologist) in/around the Pittsburgh area.  This may be a long shot on this board, but I figured I would try.  Any suggestions?

TIA!

Re: RE Recommendations?

  • I went to Reproductive Health Specialists in Penn Hills and I LOVED them!  I started out at Magee's fertility group and switched when I felt they missed a diagnosis in my infertility (they did, I was diagnosed with Stage IV endo once I went to RHS).  They remembered us when we went in and I never had to go back through my history when I had an appointment.  They also were very understanding with our financial situation and made recommendations to fit both our goal and our financial needs.  I went there for about 2 years and saw all the doctors there (there are 3), and each one is great.  Let me know if you have any other questions, I would be happy to answer any!

  • That's actually where my husband went for his SA.  He said it was really nice there and everyone was really friendly.  I'm glad someone else had a positive experience there - I will definitely look into them.

I'm glad to hear that they are understanding with financial situations.  I know our insurance does not cover any infertility treatments at all so it would all have to be OOP.

Thanks so much for your help! :)

  • Magee...Dr. Wakim was our doctor.  Obviously it worked for us, so I can highly recommend him.  He was referred to us by my husband's urologist, who was also affiliated with UPMC.  Another big factor why I didn't go with RHS was their location.  I live in the north hills, work in downtown.  With all of the monitoring appointments that are needed in the mornings, I chose UPMC because it was on my way to work. East was way out of the way for me.

If both locations work for you, I would definitely meet with both doctors and make a decision, as I have heard good things from both.  Good luck to you.

  • I saw Dr. Sanfilippo at Magee.  We had a very positive experience with his office, although we ended up conceiving on our own.  My SIL also was a patient of his and would recommend him, too.  She and BIL had a successful IVF 10 years ago with him.

  • My husband and I went to RHS and had a positive experience. We were "unexplained infertility" and after 1 round of IVF we conceived. All 3 MDs there are great, new facility, not the best location given it's proximity to 376 and early morning commutes but felt we received quality care there. We had started at Magee with Dr. Wakim, after 2 failed IUIs and lack of personalization we moved to RHS. They have a cost-savings program for IVF, and if you conceived after the 1st try you end up losing money (which was our case) but we had multiple friends who had been through it with success on their 2nd / 3rd try so we took the financial risk.
  • Thank you so much for more doctors name - now I can research and compare.

Thanks so much everyone!! I really appreciate it!

  • I liked Dr. Albert at Reproductive Health Specialists.  We have unexplained IF.  Unfortunately RHS helped us with 6 IVF cycles that didn't work (3 early miscarriages), but I did really like them and trust them.  My current, God-willing, successful pregnancy was with Dr. Kligman at CRMI Cornell in NYC. Cornell wasn't quite as warm & fuzzy, but I don't regret the inconvenience of traveling to NYC at all!  Cost was very comparable.

  • I used Dr. Kauma at West Penn (Jones Institute).  I loved them - their staff is amazing and the Doctor is so very sweet.  My gyno is part of West Penn so when I asked for a recommendation, he just gave me Dr. Kauma's name.  I didn't "shop" around but I use West Penn for everything since my insurance covers mostly everything and all my records get shared easily.

    GOOD LUCK!

  • hi!

i actually had a poor experience with RHS. we're unexplained IF and the dr we met with wanted us to go straight to IUI/IVF and refused to do any cycles of meds first only (monitored, of course). i never returned. i also was never able to make it to my appt to meet with sanfallippo/wakim.

if you want to page chrissyrmu on the local board on TN, she used an RE north of the city but i can't recall the name. she was successful as well. or if you prefer, i can ask her and pass along the info. i keep in touch with her.

hang in there & good luck!!
