Postpartum Depression

Seroquel during pregnancy

Has anyone needed to take this for bipolar illness?  I know its a Cat C but I'd like to hear personal experiences.

Re: Seroquel during pregnancy

  • I took Seroquel beginning in about month 4 (had tried going without medication and it became apparent that was creating a much bigger problem).  I took between 200 and 400 mg months 4 through 9.  I did not have any problems related to the Seroquel, and my now 12-week old daughter is perfectly healthy.  My OB enrolled me in a study which Massachusetts General Hospital is currently doing on antipsychotic medications and pregnancy.  You may want to look into this to help other women in the future.  You don't have to be located in Massachusetts to take part in the study (I'm actually on the West coast).  Please feel free to ask me anything at all; I know how hard it is to find others with this experience.

  • I currently take Seroquel.  I didn't take it while pregnant b/c I didn't need it.  I was diagnosed with PPD/PPA at 7 months PP.  I was on 600mg for about 1 year and a half and now I am weaned down to 50mg.  I am also on 2 other drugs and going to try to wean off of those too.  We want to get pregnant in about 2 years so I want to be off of all my meds before then.  However, if my drs feel I need my serequel or any of my other psych meds during pregnancy...I guess I will have to cross that bridge when I come to it.  I don't want to do it, but I know a lot of women have healthy babies on these meds.  Just keep up with your drs and maybe a therapist about everything.  Good luck!
PPD/PPA Mom...it has been super hard, but I'm making it! Slow steps...
Mom to Carter (6), and Calianne (1).
Proud VBAC, natural birth, breastfeeding, cloth diapering momma!

This exactly. Tried to go cold turkey off my reg meds (Depakote and Zoloft) and ended up on Seroquel (200-400) from month 2-9. We added Zoloft back in at some point and now, 10 weeks pp, I'm stepping down the seroquel so I can go back my pre-preg cocktail. We are all doing great.

Seroquel was awesome for the mania and depression. Plus it helped me sleep like a champ through my whole pregnancy, even the end when all the ladies are complaining.
